Carter Swift turned in a career-best time to win the 50 free prelims

OXFORD, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team will send 13 of its swimmers into Thursday night's championship heats at the Mid-American Conference Championships after a strong showing in the preliminary session, March 1. The Eagles clocked 10 new career-best times, while freshman Carter Swift (Shepparton, Victoria, Australia) won the 50 freestyle prelims.

The Eagles opened the morning with a strong showing in the 500 free as four of its swimmers will compete in tonight's finals. Sophomore Tanner Olmos (Clovis, Calif.-Buchanan) paced the Green and White, turning in a season-best time of 4:30.37, good for seventh-place. Olmos' time is the best mark for Eastern this season. Junior JF Murphy (Montreal, Quebec-Sainte Anne) and sophomores Parker Saladin (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) and Alex Arrieta (Miami, Fla.-Doral Academy Center) can all earn EMU points as they will compete in the consolation heats.

Eastern showed a display of depth in the 200 individual medley, as the Eagles claimed six spots in the top-20. Juniors led the way as Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C.-Cary) and Jake Tyson (Ipswich, England-Northgate) snagged a pair of top-five finishes. Kawaguchi clocked a career-best time of 1:47.77 to take second, while Tyson used a season-best time of 1:47.94 to lock up a fourth-place finish. Sophomore Matan Segal (Lehavim, Israel-Hof HaSharon), freshman Ben Brooks (Avon, Ohio-Avon), and junior Ricky Perez (Greenfield, Wis.-Greenfield) finished the morning at 12th, 13th, and 15th, respectively, all earning them lanes in the 'B' finals.

The 50 free was an event for the freshmen as three qualified for tonight's final. Swift had an outstanding morning as he turned in a career-best time to win the prelims. The Victoria, Australia native touched in at 20.05, clocking the best time for the Green and White this season while narrowly edging out a Missouri State swimmer. Fellow freshman Chris O'Shea (Miller Place, N.Y.-Rocky Points) also clocked a career-best time of 20.47 to take eighth, earning himself a lane in the championship heat. Freshman Alec Hoch (Orchard Park, N.Y.-Orchard Park) and senior Connor Johnson (Fort Bragg, N.C.-Terry Sanford) turned in 13th and 15th-place finishes, respectively, to lock up consolation lanes tonight.
