The Eagles return to action in Ypsilanti Friday

LINCOLN, Neb. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team was swept by the University of Nebraska, 4-0, Sunday, Feb. 4, to wrap up a solid weekend of play at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.

"This match was always going to be a tough contest, but despite being our third match in three days, we did a good job playing some tough focused tennis," said head coach Jayson Wiseman.

In the doubles point, the senior duo of Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikhani) and Andrea Martinovska  (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) were once again locked in a tight contest when the doubles were called, trailing the Cornhusker's No. 2 pair 4-3 at the time. The No. 1 duo of Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) and Giuliana Ansaloni (Bergamo, Italy-Centro Studi Leonardo Da Vinci) were swept 3-0, while the No. 3 pairing of Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco) and Natalia Regalado (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco) lost by a score of 6-1.

Singles proved to be a tough task as well, as Nebraska took wins at the No. 3, 4, and 5 matches. Anna Veleva (Sofia, Bulgaria) fell 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3, Martinovska lost 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4, and Regalado came up short 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5.

In the unfinished matches, Gogvadze was leading 6-1, 0-3 at No. 1 singles when the match was called. Mayerova was trailing, 6-1, 3-3 at No. 2 and Barcelo Almoyna was down 5-6 at No. 6.

"Despite the team loss there were definitely some positives," said Wiseman. "Ani was on the verge of closing out her match for the second straight day against a very tough opponent when the match was clinched and she and Andrea have played exceptionally well in doubles all weekend. Alejandra was battling at No. 6 and didn't even get through her first set when the match ended and Marie was bouncing back strong at 3-All in the second set after losing the first 1-6. We played a lot of good matches this weekend and we have a lot of positives to take with us into our matches next weekend."

Eastern returns to action at home Friday, Feb. 9 at 1 p.m. when it welcomes Grand Valley State to the Chippewa Club.
