The Eagles host Grand Valley State and Travel to Pittsburgh and Cleveland State
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University tennis team returns to the courts for another trio of matches this weekend, hosting Grand Valley State University at the Chippewa Racquet Club, Friday, Feb. 9 at 1 p.m. The Eagles then hit the road for a match Saturday, Feb. 9 at 12 p.m. at the University of Pittsburgh, and then stop by Cleveland State University to finish off the weekend, Sunday, Feb. 11 at 10 a.m.
All three opponents for the weekend are uncommon foes for the Eagles, as the most recent matchup against any of the three was 1997 when Eastern defeated Pitt 7-0 on the road. EMU has also faced Grand Valley State on just one occasion in its history, a 9-0 victory in the 1976-77 season. Saturday's match at Cleveland State will be the first matchup between the two schools in tennis.
Grand Valley State is one of the premier NCAA Division II tennis programs in the country, and is opening up their spring dual season with the Eagles Friday. The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference holds its tennis championships in the fall, and the Lakers went a perfect 10-0 in league play and then won the conference tournament over Wayne State, 5-3.
Pitt has started the dual season 3-1, most recently coming off of a 3-1 loss to VCU. The Panthers have defeated Youngstown State as well as two fellow Mid-American Conference members, Akron and Bowling Green. Saturday's match is a string of seven-straight home matches to start the year for Pittsburgh.
Cleveland State has struggled out of the gate in the spring season, going 0-5 to begin dual play. The Vikings have lost home matches to Duquesne and Toledo, and dropped road bouts at Dayton, Indiana, and Butler. CSU also plays Tennessee and NCAA Division III Oberlin this weekend before welcoming EMU to town.
Eastern is 2-2 to start the dual season, dropping matches to Colorado State and Nebraska while defeating Youngstown State and South Dakota. They look to move over the .500 threshold before an eight-match road trip to Oklahoma and Texas later in February.
