EMU Tennis Comes Up Short at Pitt, 5-2

Gogvadze and Mayerova took the top two singles for the Eagle's points
WEXFORD, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team took on the University of Pittsburgh for just the second time in program history Saturday, Feb. 10, falling 5-2 in a hard-fought match with the Panthers at the Oxford Athletic Club.
The match opened with a tough loss for the Eagles in the doubles point. The No. 1 and 2 duos went down by narrow 6-3 and 6-4 scores, respectively, while No. 3 pair Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Pacheco) and Natalia Regalado (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Pacheco) was tied 5-5 against their foes.
Pitt took control of the match in the singles portion, winning at No. 3 and No. 5 to take a commanding 3-0 lead. Eastern made it interesting, with great battles at all remaining spots, as senior Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia / Khikhani) came out on top at No. 1 singles, 7-6, 6-4. The Panthers secured the win by taking the No. 6 battle, but the teams finished out the other two matches for good measure. EMU junior Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) got the Eagles' their second point with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 2.
