EMU Tennis Falls to Colorado State for First Loss of Season, 4-1

Natalia Regalado secured the Eagles' lone point at No. 6 singles

LINCOLN, Neb. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team fell for the first time in the 2018 portion of the season, 4-1, to the Colorado State University, Saturday, Feb. 3 at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Nebraska.

"This was a tough match and really had the potential to go either way," said head coach Jayson Wiseman. "Almost all the singles matches were extremely competitive. Unfortunately we started off the match slow and a little flat in the doubles and it cost us today."

In the doubles point, the senior duo of Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikhani) and Andrea Martinovska  (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) were leading 4-3 at No. 2 doubles but were cut short following losses in the first and third slots. Both the No. 1 duo of Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) and Giuliana Ansaloni (Bergamo, Italy-Centro Studi Leonardo Da Vinci) and No. 3 pairing of Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco) and Natalia Regalado (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco) lost by scores of 6-1.

The Eagles were unable to find their way in the singles portion of the match, as Barcelo Almoyna's win at No. 6 singles was the lone tally for the Green and White. The senior won by a score of 6-1, 6-3. Gogvadze and Ansaloni were both in tightly contested matches at No. 1 and No. 4 respectively, but the match was decided before the completion of their bouts.

"Our team was a little tired early on and didn't have a good enough effort to get the doubles point," said Wiseman. "It is definitely something we need to fix quickly as we have a lot of matches this month with short turnarounds and we can't afford to spot other teams a 1-0 lead just because we played the day before."

Senior Anna Veleva (Sofia,Bulgaria) made her 2018 dual debut with a hard-fought 7-5, 7-6 loss at No. 3 singles, while Mayerova was bested at No. 2 by a final of 6-1, 6-2 and Martinovska was defeated 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5.

Eastern finishes up its trip to the Cornhusker state by taking on the University of Nebraska, Sunday, Feb. 4 at 10 a.m at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.
