Junior Max Schuemann led the way with an 8-for-10 day
FT. MYERS, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team opened its 2018 campaign by getting swept by Florida Gulf Coast University in doubleheader action Friday, Feb. 16, at Swanson Stadium. EMU (0-2) lost game one in a heartbreaking 6-5 walk-off loss, followed up by a 12-3 defeat in game two.
Junior Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) highlighted the doubleheader at the plate for the Green and White, going a stellar 8-for-10, including two doubles, an RBI, and three runs scored.
Game One: Florida Gulf Coast 6, Eastern Michigan 5
EMU had a furious comeback spoiled with a walk-off loss in game one of the doubleheader. Eastern trailed 5-1 after three innings, and came back to tie it at five, before losing on the walk-off single in the ninth.
EMU out-hit FGCU (2-0), 11-8, and also benefitted from four FGCU errors. Eastern was led by Schuemann, who tied his career-high with four hits, to go along with two runs scored. Freshman Nate Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) tallied a pair of hits in his debut, while also adding his first career RBI. Sophomore Devin Hager (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) had the other multi-hit game, going 2-for-3, while fellow sophomore Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) had a two-RBI day.
On the mound, junior starting pitcher Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice) took a no decision after tallying four strikeouts over six innings. Fellow junior Caleb Hester (Coloma, Mich.-Coloma) had a solid day in his first appearance in almost a year, going 1.2 scoreless innings.
EMU struck right away as Schuemann got the first hit of the season with a single, and advanced to third on a wild pick-off attempt. He was driven in on the next at-bat, an RBI groundout from Owings, to make it 1-0 after half an inning.
Eastern kept FGCU off the board until the third inning, where they struck for five runs on four hits to spring ahead, 5-1, into the fourth.
The Eagles got one back in the sixth with the same formula as the first. Schuemann notched his second hit, and advanced to third on a steal and wild throw. Owings drove him in once again to make it 5-2. The deficit tightened in the seventh, as EMU got two more.
Nate Jones and junior John Rensel Jr. (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallmadge) started the frame with back-to-back hits, followed by a sac bunt. After an RBI groundout from junior Cameron Cruz (Chandler, Ariz.-Hamilton (Mesa C.C.)) and wild pitch, EMU found itself down just one. They then proceeded to load up the bags with two outs, but FGCU escaped the jam to maintain its lead.
EMU finally broke through in the eighth, as the Jones brothers went back-to-back with Nick leading off with a double, and Nate driving him in with a single to make it all-square at five. Hester then tossed a scoreless eighth after getting the final two batters out in the seventh, to send it to the ninth tied. In the ninth, FGCU loaded up the bags with no outs and walked it off with a single, dealing EMU the 6-5 defeat.
Game Two: Florida Gulf Coast 12, Eastern Michigan 3
Game two did not end quite as close, as FGCU led wire-to-wire. Eastern pieced together six hits led by another four-hit effort from Schuemann, tying his career-best again, which included two doubles, an RBI, and a run scored. Senior Luke DeVenney (Des Moines, Iowa-Dowling Catholic) recorded the other RBI. On the mound, junior Mitchell Sparks (Willis, Texas-Carmel (Ind.) (Iowa Lakes C.C.)) tossed three innings, striking out three in his EMU debut.
FGCU struck first, tagging Eastern for a four spot in the first inning to take the early advantage. Eastern broke the shutout in the third with some heroics from Schuemann. After notching his sixth hit of the day, a single, he stole second, and advanced to third on the throw. He would come into score on a wild pitch, making it 4-1.
Eastern's deficit extended in the fourth with three unearned runs to make it 7-1 heading into the fifth. Two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings gave FGCU a commanding 11-1 lead, which they did not relinquish. They tacked on one more in the eighth to make it 12-1, before DeVenney and Schuemann tallied RBI singles in the ninth. EMU's ninth-inning push was not enough though, as FGCU prevailed in the end, 12-3.
Eastern returns to the diamond tomorrow, Feb. 17, for game three of the series against Florida Gulf Coast. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
