The Eagles will send representatives to three meets across Friday and Saturday, Feb. 16-17
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team rounds out its indoor regular season slate this weekend at the Silverston Invite Friday, Feb. 16 in Ann Arbor, Mich. and the Alex Wilson Invite Saturday, Feb. 17 in South Bend, Ind. The Eagles will send 15 student-athletes to the Silverston, while the distance medley relay squad looks to qualify for the national championship as the only EMU representatives at the Alex Wilson Invite. Additionally, senior Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich.-Davison) will travel to Allendale, Mich. to take part in the GVSU Tune Up Friday, Feb. 16.
The invite follows a weekend which saw two student-athletes mark their names at the top of EMU's all-time leaderboard in the 3000m and mile run. The record setting performances came courtesy of redshirt senior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia-Lyceum #83) and senior Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich.-Chippewa Valley) at the Husky Classic, Feb. 10, as Bogdonava earned a 3000m time of 9:05.8 and Cizmas notched a time of 4:39.29 in the mile. Bogdanova's time eclipsed her prior personal-best time by almost ten seconds and surpassed current senior McDermitt's then-all-time record of 9:10.42. For her efforts, the Kazan, Russia native earned Mid-American Conference Track Athlete of the Week honors for her second weekly award of the season.
Cizmas was able to top her personal-record she set in the mile two weeks ago, which nearly missed the all-time mark by a little over a tenth of a second. This time, she exceeded the all-time record that was set in 2014 by Victoria Voronko, and in doing so, claimed the top-spot in the MAC for the mile. EMU now holds five of the conference's top-10 rankings in both the mile and 3000m, including the top-three spots in the 3000m, which are held by the trio of Bogdanova, Cizmas, and McDermitt, respectively. Additionally, Bogdanova's time ranks 19th in the country, while Cizmas' is placed at 24th.
The weekend will begin at the Silverston Invite, with competition scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Action continues Saturday, with the distance medley relay squad beginning their race at 11:45 a.m. Fans can follow along via live results for the Silverston by clicking here, and the Alex Wilson Invite by clicking here.
