Women’s Basketball Shuts Down Northwood, 53-39, to Close out 2018

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – In its final tune-up before Mid-American Conference play begins, the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team cruised past Northwood University, 53-39, Sunday, Dec. 30, inside the Convocation Center. It marked the fifth time this season that Eastern held an opponent to 50-or-less points, the most by an EMU squad since the 2011-12 campaign when it did so six times.
With the victory, EMU collected its seventh victory of the season for its most wins before conference play since the 2015-16 campaign. That year, EMU posted a 9-2 non-conference mark en route to a trip to the Postseason WNIT.
After a slow start, EMU's (7-4) defense came alive late in the second quarter to hold NU without a field goal for nearly 12 minutes. It marked the longest EMU had held an opponent without a field goal since Nov. 21, 2015, against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. In that contest, the Eagles kept the Vaqueros off the board for a total of 14:20.
EMU's offense responded with 18-0 run over that span to effectively put the game out of reach. Eastern was 7-of-14 from the field during that timeframe, while holding Northwood 0-for-10 with five turnovers.
Redshirt sophomore Corrione Cardwell (Cleveland, Ohio-New Tech East) paced the EMU attack with 22 points, five rebounds, four assists, and four steals and redshirt senior Danielle Minott (Miami, Fla.-Miami Country Day-Syracuse) added 12 points, six rebounds, and four steals.
Northwood (4-7, 1-3 GLIAC) was limited to just 23.6 percent shooting (13-of-55) and a 22.8 percent (5-for-22) clip from outside. Both were season-lows for EMU opponents, while NU's field goal percent was tied for eighth-worst in Convocation Center history. Meanwhile, EMU finished the day shooting 37.0 percent (20-of-54) from the floor.
Eastern took an early 8-3 edge, but a scoring drought of nearly four minutes allowed Northwood to take the advantage, 11-8, for the first time on a Brooke Ditto three-pointer with 3:38 to play in the frame. Unfortunately, sophomore Autumn Hudson's (Richwood, Ohio-North Union) layup with 3:17 remaining was all EMU could muster over the final 7:31 of the quarter, as the Green and White finished 1-of-11 from the floor.
Shaking off the nine-day layoff, a three by Cardwell capped an 8-2 run by the home squad at the seven minute mark of the second quarter to give Eastern Michigan the lead back, 18-16. EMU headed to the break up 27-22 as its defense forced nine first half turnovers and held NU without a field goal for the final 5:30 of the half.
Eastern shot 37.9 percent (11-of-29) in the first 20 minutes, compared to a 28.6 percent (8-of-28) for Northwood. Cardwell led all scorers going 5-for-8 for 13 points while Minott added seven points, four rebounds and three steals. Six different players scored for Northwood in the opening half, which was out-scored 7-2 in points off turnovers.
With Northwood's offense stuck on 22, the Eagles built the edge to nine, 33-21, with Hudson's put-back with 7:57 still showing in to third. Everything continued to roll in EMU's favor with the margin growing to 16 points, 38-22, on bucket by freshman Natalia Pineda (Miami, Fla.-John A. Ferguson) at the 4:21 mark of the third.
NU was finally able to end the extended skid when Zakiya Wells connected on a layup with 4:02 still showing in the third. A total of 11:47 elapsed between the Northwood field goals, the longest such mark by EMU going 14:20 against UTRGV during the 2015-16 season.
Eastern would lead by as many as 24 with 8:50 to play in the game. However, Northwood was able to make it look much closer as it held the Eagles scoreless the final 6:07 of the contest.
Eastern Michigan opens its 37th season of MAC play Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019, at Kent State University. Game time is set for 5 p.m. from the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center. The contest will be shown on ESPN+ with WEMU (89.1 FM) providing radio coverage.
