The Eagles will compete in a quad against Michigan, Central Michigan, and Western Michigan
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team returns to competition Sunday, Dec. 2 with an exhibition in Ann Arbor, Mich. The exhibition will include host-University of Michigan, as well as Mid-American Conference foes Central Michigan University and Western Michigan University.
Under second-year head coach Katie Minasola, EMU looks to get back to its winning ways, having taken home the MAC Tournament Title in both 2016 and 2017, as well as the program's first-ever regular season title in 2017.
"I am really looking forward to getting the competition season started," said Minasola. "This team has developed an amazing connection and I am excited to see it transform on the competition floor. We have such a special team with a great mindset. This team is prepared and I am excited to experience this journey with them."
The Eagles lost a talented group of seniors over the offseason, which consisted of Kirsten Gendron, Megan Marino, Lacey Rubin, Jules Schwartz, and the program's first-ever All-American, Kendall Valentin. Despite the turnover, EMU returns a strong group of student-athletes, including 2018 NCAA Regional Qualifier, junior Emili Dobronics (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg).
Along with Dobronics, Eastern welcomes back eight Eagles who were consistently relied upon last season. Included in the aforementioned group is senior Megan Hultgren (Rockford, Ill.-Sacred Heart Classical Center), who is poised for a stellar final season after posting career-highs in all four events a season ago. Eastern will also rely heavily on the outstanding sophomore class, who combined for 21 performances that earned a 9.75-or-better in their first year of competition.
Sunday's meet not only serves as EMU's first opportunity to compete in a real meet-like setting, but it also gives the Eagles their first bit of action against MAC rivals Central Michigan and Western Michigan. The Chippewas are coming off a season which saw them claim both the MAC Regular Season and Tournament Championships, while the Broncos concluded the season with a fifth-place finish at the tournament, one spot behind the Green and White. Eastern is scheduled to take on the two in back-to-back weeks during the regular season, hosting WMU Feb. 8, before making the trek to Mount Pleasant, Mich. Feb. 15.
