Eagles push fifth set to extra points, effort falls in favor of the RedHawks
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - In a battle of the Mid-American Conference's best, the Eastern Michigan University volleyball team nearly outlasted preseason favorite Miami University, 3-2, inside the Convocation Center, Friday night, Oct. 12.
After dropping the first set, 25-9, Eastern Michigan (13-8, 5-2 MAC) stormed back, winning sets two and three, 25-18 and 25-16. Miami (14-5, 6-1 MAC) claimed a tight fourth set, 25-23, to force a decisive fifth frame that went to the wire. Trading slim leads back-and-forth MU escaped with an 18-16 win to take the match, 3-2.
Eastern Michigan saw a balanced offensive attack, as three Eagles recorded double-digit kills. Leading the way for EMU was redshirt junior Cassie Haut (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary Catholic Central) who posted a match-high 16 kills with a .481 attacking percentage. Additionally, sophomore April Houston (Minneapolis, Minn.-Southwest) and senior Jordan Smith (Solon, Iowa-Solon) added 14 kills each.
Defensively, the Green and White was paced by senior libero Alyssa LaFace's (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Mark) 27 digs, her fourth-highest total of the year. Sophomore Franki Strefling (Niles, Mich.-Buchanan) and junior Camille Schomer (Rochester, Mich.-Oakland Christian) each tacked on 11 digs apiece, while redshirt senior setter Mallory Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland) added 10 more digs as part of her double-double performance.
Eastern led Miami in kills (58 to 50), largely in part to the performances of setting duo of junior Riley Taylor (Indianapolis, Ind.-Perry Meridian) and Rajewski, totaling 19 and 29 assists, respectively. EMU also bested Miami in hitting percentage (.141 to .129) and assists (56 to 44).
Eastern Michigan closes out its four-game homestand against Bowling Green State University, Oct. 13. Match time at the Convocation Center is set for 7 p.m.
