YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team opens Mid-American Conference dual action with a pair of road duals this weekend, Friday-Sunday, Jan. 5-7. EMU opens against Ohio University at 7 p.m. Friday, before heading to Norfolk for a 1 p.m. bout against Old Dominion University on Sunday.
    The duals can be followed live on Twitter by following @EMUWrestling, while a live stream ($) will be produced for the ODU match. Full results can be found at TrackWrestling and will be posted to EMUEagles.com following the match.

BATTLING THE BOBCATS: EMU and Ohio have met 12 times since 2005-06, with the Bobcats holding a decisive 10-2 record over that span. EMU will be looking for its first dual victory in the series since 2011-12, a 22-14 Eagle win.

LAST SEASON VS OHIO: This will be the second straight season EMU will open conference action against Ohio. Last season, the Bobcats knocked off the Eagles inside the Convocation Center, 20-12. EMU won four bouts, all by decision.

MEETING THE MONARCHS: Eastern and Old Dominion have met four times since ODU joined the MAC for wrestling back in 2014. EMU leads the all-time series, 3-1, including winning the last two match ups.

LAST SEASON VS ODU: EMU notched its first conference dual of the 2016-17 season when it defeated ODU, 25-14, inside the Convocation Center. The Eagles won five bouts on the mat, and took a sixth via forfeit, to secure the win. Bonus point wins from Noah Gonser and Kyle Springer aided in the 11-point victory. EMU returns all five starters who won matches in the dual.

EAGLES IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS: Redshirt senior heavyweight Gage Hutchison is currently the lone Eagle ranked by national outlets, coming in as high as 17th. A full list of rankings can be found on page 10 of the notes.

MACCALLUM TAKES EIGHTH AT THE MIDLANDS: Redshirt junior Kayne MacCallum took eighth place at 184 lbs. at the 55th Annual Midlands Championships, Dec. 30. The Illinois native went 3-3 on the weekend to secure the podium finish in the bracket of 30 of the top wrestlers in the country. His placement marked the first time in EMU program history that it had a Midlands placer in three straight seasons.

TOTAL DOMINATION: So far this season, redshirt senior Kyle Springer has been a bonus point machine for the Eagles. In his 12 wins, 11 of them have come with bonus points, including a team-high seven major decisions, two technical falls, and three pins. He also has a pin and major decision in two dual wins for a total of 10 dual points.

MOVING UP THE RECORD BOOK: In his five-year EMU career, Gage Hutchison has racked up 85 career victories, which ranks tied for eighth all-time. EMU Hall of Fame inductee Steve Brown holds the all-time record with 117 wins.

UP NEXT ON THE MATS: EMU returns to dual action next Saturday, Jan. 13, when it heads to Columbia, Mo. to take on nationally ranked Missouri. First whistle against the Tigers is set for 1 p.m. ET.
