The two teams split the bouts, 5-5

ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team was just barely edged out, 21-17, in its Mid-American Conference opening dual against Ohio University Friday evening, Jan. 5, at the OU Convocation Center. Despite tying in dual wins, 5-5, Ohio (1-4, 1-2 MAC) knocked off the Eagles (4-4, 0-1 MAC) by the strength of four bonus point wins.

EMU notched two bonus point wins themselves, via major decisions from redshirt freshmen Tomas Gutierrez (Arvada, Colo.-Pomona) and Andrew McNally (Uniontown, Ohio-Lake). In the end, Ohio's three major decisions, and the lone pin of the dual, were enough to give the Bobcats the four-point win.

The dual started out promising for the Eagles, as Gutierrez notched the first bonus point dual win of his career. The freshman went up 2-1 after one, and extended it to 5-1 after two. He continued to stack up points, eventually notching the major decision, 12-4, to give EMU the early 4-0 lead.

Ohio responded in a big way, however, winning the next four matches, with three via bonus points, to fly ahead with a commanding 17-4 lead.

Redshirt sophomore Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio-Lake) broke the streak with a tight 9-6 decision win at 165 lbs. The Akron native was down 2-1 after one, but battled back to be up 5-4 into the third. There, he tallied four more points to seal the decision win and cut the deficit to 10, 17-7.

The Eagles made it two in a row at 174 lbs., as McNally notched EMU's second major decision of the day, 11-3, to bring the team tally to 17-11 with three bouts to go. It was McNally's first major decision, and third bonus point dual win of the season.

Redshirt junior Kayne MacCallum (Green Oaks, Ill.-Libertyville) got the Eagles within three at 184 lbs. as he ground out a tough 3-0 decision. A 0-0 score after one led to an escape in period two for MacCallum. Starting the third in neutral, he fended off all of the Bobcats' wrestlers shots, and got a late takedown, sealing the win. It was his fifth dual win on the season, tied for the team lead. With the Eagles within striking distance, Ohio bounced back with yet another major decision at 197 lbs. to put the dual out of reach, 21-14.

Finishing out the dual, No. 17 nationally ranked redshirt senior heavyweight Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) matched up with familiar foe Zack Parker of Ohio. Looking to avenge last year's loss in the dual, Hutchison fought hard to a 4-4 tie, forcing overtime. Hutchison took care of business in the extra period, getting the takedown in sudden victory to end the dual on a high note. Hutchison moved his team-best record to 11-4 overall and 5-1 in duals.

EMU remains on the road to finish the weekend as they head further east to Norfolk, Va. to take on MAC foe Old Dominion University Sunday, Jan. 7. First whistle against the Monarchs is set for 1 p.m.
