Eagles Notch Season-High, Defeat Two in MSU Quad

EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team earned its highest team score of the season with a 194.950 Saturday, Jan. 27, in East Lansing, Mich. The Eagles topped the likings of Rutgers (194.225) and Pittsburgh (193.125), but could not close the gap behind quad host-Michigan State (195.525).
"I am so proud of this team," said Head Coach Katie Minasola. "We had a really great week of practice and we kept the momentum going today. They showed flashes of what they are capable of but we still have more to give, we still have improvements to make, but we are on the right track. I am excited to keep building on this performance."
The meet was highlighted by season highs on floor (48.9), vault (48.75), and beam (48.925), including seven performances which earned new or tied career-bests.
EMU started its day off with its best performance on floor this season, marking a 48.9 behind senior Kirsten Gendron (Birch Run, Mich.-Frankenmuth) and sophomore Emili Dobronics' (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) scores of 9.825, which serve as individual season highs on the event. Additionally, the 9.825 tied Gendron's career-high and marked a new career-best for Dobronics. Senior Megan Marino (Girard, Ohio-Howland) also came up big with a season-high of her own, earning a 9.775, while the freshmen floor duo of Jada Rondeau (Norwood Young America, Minn.-Central) and Megan Benzie (Roanoke, Va.-Cave Spring) earned scores of 9.75 and 9.7, respectively.
Eastern carried its momentum over to vault, where they also notched a new season-best team score of 48.750. Dobronics paced the Eagles with a 9.8 to secure a new career-high in the event, with junior Megan Hultgren (Rockford, Ill.-Sacred Heart Classical Center) and senior Kendall Valentin (Holmdel, N.J.-Holmdel) marking back-to-back 9.775s to round out the event. Additionally, senior Jules Schwartz (Gilbert, Ariz.-Mesquite) earned a new season-high, 9.725, while redshirt freshman Allison Smith (Telford, Pa.-Souderton) and freshman Cali Harden (Saline, Mich.-Saline) tied their career-highs with scores of 9.675 and 9.65, respectively.
EMU struggled through its first few routines on bars before Rubin and Valentin finished out the event with a pair of 9.825s, which ties Rubin's season high on bars. Freshman Cortney Bezold (Maineville, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick) also highlighted the event with a career-high, notching a 9.65.
Although the Green and White struggled through bars, they bounced back with a new season-high on beam with a 48.925. Rubin led the Eagles with a 9.85 to tie for the event title, however, the lineup was consistent all the way through, with Valentin and Hultgren earning a pair of 9.8s, with Hultgren's serving as a new season-best. Dobronics closed out her day with a 9.75 to finish with an all-around score of 38.900, which placed second out of six competitors. Additionally, freshman Brianna Price (Kings Mountain, N.C.-Homeschool) delivered with an impressive new personal-best of 9.725.
The Eagles will look to build on this season-best performance when they head home for the annual Beauty and the Beast meet Friday, Feb. 2, where they will take on the Flames of Illinois-Chicago. Action is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
