MILAN, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - In its first dual of 2018, the Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team had an outstanding showing against Mid-American Conference foe Ball State University, Friday, Jan. 19. The Eagles move to 5-1 in duals for the year as they downed the Cardinals, 168-116, securing their 12th consecutive win over BSU.
The Eagles had a strong open to the night, taking the top two spots in the 200 medley relay. Juniors Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg), Dora Vrcic (Dubrovacka, Split, Croatia), and Stephanie Johnston (Holland, Mich.) teamed up with sophomore Claire Young (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.-Grosse Pointe South) to win the event with a time of 1:44.03. Another EMU foursome followed close behind at 1:48.30.
Moving to the individual portion of the meet, junior Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville) posted back-to-back first-place finishes in the 1000 and 200 freestyle races. In the 1000 free, Swartz bested the field with a time of 10:25.98, nearly six seconds better than the runner-up. The Dayton, Ohio product turned in a season-best time of 1:53.25 to win the 200 free.
Eastern kept the winning streak alive in the following two events as Young won the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.04 and Duncan crushed the field in the 100 breaststroke. Clocking in at 1:02.91, the Galesburg, Ill. native finished almost eight full seconds before the second-place swimmer.
The Green and White earned its third sweep of the night in the 200 butterfly as junior Emilie Desnoyers (St. Alberta, Alberta) headed the trio with a time of 2:06.30. Sophomore Marcella Da Costa (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil-Colegia Dom Bosco) and freshman Ali Staver (Bettendorf, Iowa-Pleasant Valley) both used season-best times to round out the top-three at 2:09.11 and 2:09.19, respectively.
Freshman Meike Staffeldt (Niedersachsen, Germany) and Johnston tied for first-place in the 50 free with a time of 24.28, while senior Chase Walker (Virginia Beach, Virginia-Landstown) took third at 24.53.
EMU was outstanding on the springboard as they posted the top scores in both sessions. Due to the location change, the divers competed in the 1-meter dive twice. In the first round, senior Molly Miller (Farmington Hills, Mich.-Harrison) took the top spot with a final score of 279.67. Senior Alli Shereda (Fraser, Mich.-Fraser) was close behind Miller with a final score of 269.25, but turned around to post the best score in the second round at 284.77.
Transitioning back to the pool, Eastern Michigan, well ahead in the team standings, elected to defer points except for first-place finishers for the remainder of the meet.
The Eagles continued with the winning trend as sophomore Rachel Stark (Avon, Ohio) took the top-spot in the 100 free at 54.59, before Young won her second event of the night in the 200 back.
In the 200 breast, freshman Carlee Jones (Edgewood, Ky.-Notre Dame Academy) turned in a time of 2:28.26 to take first-place, while Swartz, making her breastroke debut, clocked the third fastest time in the pool at 2:30.59.
Taking the 500 free by over three seconds, freshman Kaitlynd Scanlan (Waukesha, Wisc.-Pewaukee) earned her first top-finish as an Eagle with a blistering time of 5:10.09.
The Green and White kept swimming strong in the final two individual events. Junior Michal Liberman (Rosh Haayin, Israel-Begin) nabbed first-place in the 100 fly at 57.72, before Young bested the field in the 200 IM at 2:10.58, but did not earn any points as EMU deferred all points for the end of the meet.
In the final event of the night, the Eagles touched in the four fastest times in the 400 free relay to cap the 168-116 victory.
The Eagles return to action Saturday, Jan. 20 when they travel to Detroit, Mich. to take on in-state rivals, Wayne State University. Action inside WSU Natatorium is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
