The Eagles participate in the Notre Dame Invitational Friday, Sept. 29, following their bye week
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team travels out of state for the first time this season to compete in the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational Friday, Sept. 29, in South Bend, Ind. This will mark the 11th consecutive year the Eagles participate in the competition.
"Both team and coach are looking forward to our trip to South Bend for the annual Notre Dame Invitational, which each year attracts an outstanding field of nationally ranked teams from coast to coast," said Head Coach John Goodridge. "I have been pleased with our training and look forward to watching my boys race."
The meet will most likely see EMU's top runners compete for the first time this season, as the field of teams includes the toughest opponents the team has seen thus far. Along with the Eagles who currently rank 29th in the country, the event hosts four other nationally ranked programs, three of which hold spots within the top-15. Colorado leads the pack at No. 4, while Washington State, Southern Utah, and NC State round out the ranked competition at No. 11, 13, and 30, respectively.
The Green and White will also see MAC foe Bowling Green for the second time this season, after squaring off against them in the Spartan Invitational (Sept. 15). The Falcons are the only conference opponent EMU has raced against this season and are the only other MAC team in the field for this weekend's event.
The Eagles have yet to send some of their leading runners into action, as the first three meets of the season have been used as platforms to give underclassmen more experience running at the collegiate level. Last year's meet saw All-American Nick Raymond lead the experienced harriers with a 15th-place finish. Raymond finished out his EMU career last year, however, five of the eight harriers who competed in last year's competition return for the 2017 meet, including senior Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland-Mountain Ridge), who posted EMU's second-best finish and placed 26th overall.
The day will be packed with action, as five different races will be held throughout, all of which will take place at Burke Golf Course. The event will begin at 1:00 p.m. with the women's blue division 5,000m run, which the women's program will participate in. The men's team will compete in the blue division five-mile, which will occur immediately after the women's race. An open race including both men and women will follow the men's blue division, while the men and women's gold divisions, who will also run the 5,000m and five mile, respectively, round out the day.
Fans will be able to follow live results with a link shared on both of the cross country schedule pages on our athletic website, EMUEagles.com. The links will most likely be activated the day prior or the day of the competition.
