Eagles Complete Day One of Mary Fossum Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – In its first event of the year, the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team finished day one of the 34th Annual Mary Fossum Invitational in ninth place on the par 72, 6,334-yards Forest Akers West Golf Course. As a team, the Eagles are ranked ninth through the first 36-holes with a score of 635.
Host, Michigan State leads the field as the only team shooting under par (-13) with 563. Mid-American Conference foes Toledo and Northern Illinois sit in second and fourth, respectively, with a 600 and a 616. Western Michigan and Bowling Green also represent the conference with a sixth-place tie at 622 as Central Michigan is 10th with 647.
Senior Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne) paced the Eagles after shooting an opening round score of 80. She shaved three strokes off in the second round for a 77 and total of 157. The Baden, France native sits at 13-over for the day and is tied for 28th overall.
In her debut, freshman Preaw Sripatrprasite (Bangkok, Thailand-Siam International) led the Eagles in the first round, shooting a 78 before posting the second round with 82. Sophomore Julia Stevenson (Milford, Mich.-Milford) shot a 79 on the first round before adding two strokes during the second round for a combined 160.
Junior Penelope Guilleux (Saint Maur Des Fosse, France-Arsonval) saw the most improvement on the team, shooting an 82 on the first round before improving six strokes for a 76. Sophomore Maria Connelly (Waterville, Ohio-Anthony Wayne) shot an 85 on the first 18 and closed out the final 18 with an 84 for a 169.
Shooting the invitational as an independent is sophomore Katelin Lawson (LaSalle, Ontario-Ridge Community). Lawson finished the day tied for 45th after rounds of 80 and 82 for a 162.
The final 18-holes of the Mary Fossum Invitational resumes Sunday morning, Sept. 24, with an 8:30 a.m. tee time. Live stats are available at golfstat.com.
