Mackenzie Etienne registered the first goal of her career
BOCA RATON, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University soccer team could not keep pace with the potent attack of Florida Gulf Coast University in its final game of the FAU adidas Owl Challenge, Sunday, Aug. 27. EMU (1-2-1) and FGCU (3-1-0) were even at one at halftime, but four second half goals handed Eastern Michigan a 5-1 setback.
As a team, the Green and White cranked out just seven shots, five of which came in the first half. Florida Gulf Coast went off for 19 shots, the most by an EMU opponent this season. Junior Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) made two saves, finishing even with the FGCU keeper.
Florida Gulf Coast had an early opportunity, but EMU's defense stepped up. After a ball played over the top forced Williams to the edge of the 18 and left the goal untended, sophomore Maggie McCullough (London, Ontario-Oakridge Secondary) sacrificed her body to block a shot from going towards an open goal. The stout defensive effort sent the Green and White off the other way, but a chance in transition could not find the back of the net.
FGCU cashed in on a turnover by the Eagles in the midfield. Attempting to clear the ball with pressure coming, a touch gave Florida Gulf Coast numbers the other way. A cross to the top of the 18 on the far side was dribbled in and slotted in the upper corner near post.
Eastern got the goal back in the 33rd minute, making the most of a set piece. Sophomore Sabrina McNeill (Whitby, Ontario-Henry Street) sent the corner service to the far post where junior Mackenzie Etienne (Midland, Mich.-Midland Dow) headed home the first goal of her career, leveling the match at one.
Florida Gulf Coast pieced together the first chance of the second half, playing a ball to the opposite post where Remedios blocked it away with a tackle. On the ensuing corner, FGCU's service connected on the far post, but Williams stood her ground and made the save.
Back-to-back corners by FGCU put plenty of pressure on EMU. After defending the first one well, Florida Gulf Coast played the ball on the ground to the top of the box, where Varin Ness put it in the upper corner to take the lead.
A goal off a scramble in the box was followed by two more goals for Florida Gulf Coast, pushing the deficit to four, 5-1.
Meanwhile, Eastern Michigan registered its first shot of the second half after 33 minutes had already elapsed. Facing a 5-1 deficit, senior Chanel Vani (Brampton, Ontario-Cardinal Leger) worked her way up the near sideline, eventually sending a service to the middle of the 18, but junior Mia Colavito's (Mississauga, Ontario-Loyola Catholic) header sailed wide of the far post.
With just over 10 minutes to play, sophomore Mabel Dunn (Oakville, Ontario-White Oaks Secondary) made her EMU debut in goal. Staying strong as FGCU continued to fire away, Dunn registered a save, while facing three shots, as the Eagles dropped the match, 5-1.
At the conclusion of the tournament, redshirt junior Kristin Nason (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A Wilson) and sophomore Sabrina McNeill (Whitby, Ontario-Henry Street) were named to the FAU adidas Owl Challenge All-Tournament team.
EMU's four-game road trip comes to a close Friday, Sept. 1, in Indianapolis, Ind. There, Eastern Michigan will square off against Butler University under the lights. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
