Kaylin Williams made five saves in the setback

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University's soccer team could not muster enough offense to overcome Butler University Friday night, Sept. 1, under the lights at the Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis, Ind.  EMU's (1-3-1) stout defense kept the game tied at halftime, but a 61st minute strike pushed BU past Eastern, 1-nil.

As a team, Eastern Michigan held a 14-13 edge in shots, and a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Eagles also earned six corners, while the Bulldogs tallied four, and led the foul tally, 16-7. On the defensive end of the pitch, junior goalkeeper Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) tied a season-high with five saves.

EMU pieced together its first scoring opportunity in the 24th minute in a foul frenzy start to the match. Freshman Alia Frederick (Linden, Mich.-Linden) and redshirt junior Kristin Nason (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson) fired off back-to-back shots, but BU's Hannah Luedtke made both stops.

After Williams and the Eagles fought off a trio of corners, the Green and White answered back with a set piece of its own. Sophomore Nicole Remedios (Ajax, Ontario-Archbishop Dennis O'Connor) delivered a service in from the flag, where senior Chanel Vani (Brampton, Ontario-Cardinal Leger) ripped a shot on frame, but another save kept the game scoreless.

Wasting little time getting after it in the second half, Eastern registered four shots in the first 13 minutes but could not capitalize.

The Bulldogs' first scoring chance of the half came minutes later, heading in the game-winner on a corner kick to take a 1-nil lead in the 61st minute.

The Eagles recorded five shots over the course of the final 29 minutes, but the Bulldogs held on for the win, sending the Green and White home with a 1-nil defeat.

EMU returns to Scicluna Field next weekend, Friday, Sept. 8, for a clash with Youngstown State University. Kickoff from Ypsilanti is scheduled for 5 p.m.
