The Eagles outshot the Flames 22-16
CHICAGO (EMUEagles.com) – A 67th minute strike off the foot of freshman Alia Frederick (Linden, Mich.-Linden) capped a come-from-behind victory for the Eastern Michigan University soccer team Sunday afternoon, Aug. 20, at Flames Field in Chicago. The Eagles (1-0-1) knocked off the University of Illinois-Chicago, 2-1, as Frederick and sophomore Sabrina McNeill (Whitby, Ontario-Henry Street) tallied goals, while junior goalkeeper Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) registered a season-high seven saves.
The Eagles pounded out 22 shots, nine of which were on target, while holding the Flames (0-2-0) to just 16 shots, with just eight on goal. EMU also held a 6-4 lead in corner kicks.
Eastern controlled the pace of the game for the first 16 minutes of the match, outshooting Illinois-Chicago, 6-0, over that span. UIC's keeper made two saves, while junior Mia Colavito (Mississauga, Ontario-Loyola Catholic), freshman Madeline Olson (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville), junior Peyton Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-Holy Name), and sophomore Nicole Remedios (Ajax, Ontario-Archbishop Dennis O'Connor) had shots go wide, high, and off the cross bar.
UIC finally mustered a chance in the 22nd minute and eventually cashed in on a corner kick. EMU's defense blocked the initial set piece opportunity and Williams made a save on the second shot, but Illinois-Chicago headed in a deflection to take the early 1-nil advantage.
Trading shots on both ends, Williams kickstarted the Green and White offense in transition. After making a save, Williams moved the ball up the field quickly, where McNeill deflected a shot of the keeper from seven yards out to even the score at one in the 37th minute.
The 1-1 tie carried over to the second half as the score remained deadlocked at halftime.
Just as it did in the first half, Eastern Michigan came out firing in the second period. Rattling off nine shots over the first 15 minutes, the Green and White kept the pressure on the Illinois-Chicago defense. After four saves by UIC's Kelly Fritz and a few shots that curled off target, McNeill delivered a cross into the 18 where Frederick slotted the go-ahead goal home.
Leading 2-1 through 63 minutes of action, four saves over the remainder of play preserved Eastern's 2-1 victory.
Eastern Michigan remains on the road next weekend, Aug. 25-27, when it makes the trip to Boca Raton, Fla. for games against Florida Atlantic University and Florida Gulf Coast University as part of the FAU adidas Owl Classic. Kickoff between EMU and FAU is slated for 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25.
