NEW ORLEANS (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University's men's track and field team was honored for its academic success Friday, July 28, as the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) named EMU an All-Academic Team.
"I salute and applaud our inspiring professors, administrators, academic support personnel, and most importantly the motivation and efforts of our student-athletes for this accomplishment and recognition," Head Coach John Goodridge said.
In order for a team to garner the distinction, it must carry a team grade point average of 3.0-or-better. A total of 360 NCAA Division I teams were honored by the USTFCCCA, 142 of which were men's programs.
The Green and White maintained a team GPA of 3.03 and were one of just three Mid-American Conference programs to make the list, joining Kent State and Central Michigan.
Goodridge's squad turned in another sensational season, finishing runner-up at both the Indoor and Outdoor MAC Championships. Overall, the Eagles came away with a total of eight event titles. At the indoor meet, redshirt senior Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee) claimed gold in three events, while sophomore Cameron Hart (Columbus, Ohio-Bishop Hartley) added a win in high jump. Then, at the outdoor meet, Fink picked up two more individual titles, while redshirt junior Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich.-Mason) and sophomore Derek Ziegenfuss (Allentown, Pa.-Parkland) added one win apiece.
Fink later went on to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships, where he secured Second Team All-American honors. He closed out his incredible senior season Academic All-America awardwinner for the second consecutive season.
