YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -
With the regular season now in the books, the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team gears up for the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships, May 11-13, on the campus of Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Mich. The Green and White look to defend its title, as the team walked away with the conference championship down in Toledo one year ago.

The Eagles own the most outdoor MAC titles in conference history, having amassed a total of 12, while Kent State has the second-most at seven. Prior to last year's championship victory, EMU had not won an outdoor conference championship since 2003, when the Eagles defeated Miami, 117.5 - 106.

The Green and White won the 2016 Outdoor MAC Championship by 22 points, as Eastern defeated second-place Akron 152-130. In total, the Eagles took home five event titles throughout the three-day meet. On day two, then-sophomore Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich. - Davison) won the rescheduled 10000m race, while she also won the 5000m run on day three.

The mid-distance crew found success as well, winning both the 800m and 1500m run. In the 800m, then-sophomore Rebekah Branham (Circleville, Ohio - Circleville) turned in a career-best time of 2:10.19 to win the event, while fellow then-sophomore Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich. - Chippewa Valley) finished atop the podium in the 1500m run. Finally, Eastern took home the 4x100m relay title after clocking in at 45.72 seconds.

Following the meet, then-freshman Jessica Harris (Slidell, La. - Slidell) was named the Female Track Freshman of the Year, while Head Coach Sue Parks earned Coach of the Year honors. In total, seven Eagles earned First Team All-MAC accolades, and two more earned second team standing.

Heading into this year's MAC Championships, a number of Eagles have positioned themselves in the top-five of the conference.  Harris holds onto the No. 4 spot in the 100m, while junior Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa. - Hempfield Area) sits at No. 2 in the 200m. A pair of Eagles also rank highly in the 1500m, as senior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia - Lyceum #83) and sophomore Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind. - Zionsville Community) rank No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.

Bogdanova also ranks No. 1 in the 5000m, while McDermitt and Meyers hold the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, respectively. Rounding out the distance events, McDermitt holds the No. 1 spot in the 10000m, and Bogdanova sits No. 2 in the 3000m steeplechase. In the pole vault, senior Natalie Uy (Kettering, Ohio - Fairmont) maintains the No. 5 spot, and the triple jump features junior Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia - Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1) at No. 3.

The MAC Championships can be followed from home with live results. Once available, the link can be found on the women's track and field schedule page of EMUEagles.com.
