McDermitt Breaks MAC Championship Record on Day One of MAC Championships

The junior ran to a first-place finish in the 10000m
MAC Championship Day One Results
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team kicked off the 2017 Outdoor Mid-American Conference Championship today, May 11, in Kalamazoo, Mich. The Eagles, who currently sit in third with 12 points, competed in a total of four events, with one distance runner breaking the conference championship record in the 10000m.
Junior Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich. – Davison), who entered the meet as the No. 1 seed in the 10000m, did not disappoint. Clocking in at 34:07.31, the Davison, Mich. native finished atop the podium by nearly four seconds, breaking the MAC Championship record in the process. Also finishing in the top-10 was senior Anna Aldrich (Fremont, Ind. – Fremont), who claimed seventh with a career-best time of 36:03.55, further solidifying herself at the No. 9 spot in the EMU record books. Finally, redshirt sophomore Allie Knoll (Warren, Mich. – Warren Mott) took home 12th, crossing the finish line in 36:40.94.
In the hammer throw, senior Megan Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio – Woodmoore) finished 15th, posting a mark of 48.59 meters/ 159 feet 5-inches. Two Eagles competed in the javelin throw, with freshman Kristine Bourg (Shorewood, Ill. – Joliet West) leading the way. Bourg turned in a 13th-place finish, notching a throw of 35.47 meters/ 116 feet 4-inches, which was less than two meters out of the top-10. Also competing in the event was fellow freshman Gianna Salzbrunn (North Aurora, Ill. – Montini Catholic), who claimed 19th with a launch of 30.12 meters/ 98 feet 10-inches.
Salzbrunn also took part in the first half of the heptathlon. On day one, Salzbrunn finished 10th in the 200m dash, clocking in at 27.11 seconds, while she also placed 10th in the 100m hurdles after posting a time of 16.32 seconds. Moving to the high jump, the North Aurora, Ill. native snagged ninth with a career-best jump of 1.48 meters/ 4 feet 10.25-inches. Finally, Salzbrunn wrapped up with the shot put, nabbing 10th with a launch of 7.47 meters/ 24 feet 6.25-inches, which was also a personal-best. After totaling 2343 points on day one, Salzbrunn sat in 10th.
With day one now complete, the Eagles will turn their attention to day two, which picks up tomorrow, May 12, at 11 a.m. with the second half of both the decathlon and the hepathlon.
