Eagles Total Six Top-Three Finishes on Day Two of MAC Championships

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
Day two at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships for the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team came to a close today, May 12. The Green and White, who currently sit fifth with 35.5 points, claimed six top-three finishes on the day, while a number of Eagles also earned spots in tomorrow's finals.

Beginning with the 100m dash prelims, sophomore Jessica Harris (Slidell, La. – Slidell) punched her ticket to tomorrow's finals after securing seventh in 11.81 seconds. Junior Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa. – Hempfield Area) had an excellent race in the 200m prelims, posting a career-best time of 23.65 seconds, finishing first while also moving up to No. 5 in program history. Harris secured another finals spot as well, placing fifth in a personal-best 24.22 seconds.

In the 400m dash prelims, a pair of Eagles advanced to the finals. Jones took home a fourth-place finish in a career-best 54.32 seconds to move on, while freshman Micah Johnston secured eighth in a personal-best 55.62 seconds to advance as well. In fact, Jones' mark was also good for No. 8 in the EMU record books.

Junior Claire Mesa (Rockford, Ill. – Rockford Lutheran) had the best 800m race of her career, clocking in with a personal-best time of 2:12.56 to finish ninth and move onto the finals. Both Green and White runners in the 1500m run prelims advanced, with sophomore Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind. – Zionsville Community) leading the way after finishing second in 4:33.75. Also earning a finals spot was senior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia – Lyceum #83), who clocked in at 4:35.33 to take fourth.

An Eagle also moved on in the 400m hurdles. Senior Dayna Hurd (Carson, Calif. – Carson) snuck into tomorrow's finals after placing ninth with a personal-best time of 1:01.10. The Green and White claimed both second and third in the 3000m steeplechase, as Bogdanova posted a career-best time of 10:11.49 to take the silver, while redshirt senior Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium – University of Leuven) took third in 10:25.31.

Senior Natalie Uy (Kettering, Ohio – Fairmont) turned in a top-three performance in the pole vault, as she tied for third after vaulting 3.88 meters/ 12 feet 8.75-inches. In the long jump, junior Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia - Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1) was able to secure fifth, posting a jump of 6.04 meters/ 19 feet 9.75-inches, edging out the sixth-place finisher by .02 meters.

Finally, freshman Gianna Salzbrunn (North Aurora, Ill. – Montini Catholic) wrapped up day two of the heptathlon, rounding out the seven-event gauntlet with the long jump, javelin throw, and the 800m run. Salzbrunn nabbed ninth in the long jump with a mark of 5.04 meters/ 16 feet 6.25-inches, while she also took 10th in the javelin with a launch of 27.99 meters/ 91 feet 9.75-inches. She had her best performance in the 800m, however, securing fifth in a personal-best 2:29.04. Ultimately, the freshman finished 10th overall, totaling a career-best 4057 points.

With day two of the MAC Championships now complete, the Eagles conclude the conference championships tomorrow, May 13. Day three is scheduled to get rolling at 10 a.m. with the men's discus.
