YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team recently wrapped up the outdoor regular season, and now turns its focus towards the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships, May 11-13, on the campus of Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Mich. The Eagles look to capture their 24th title in program history, and the first since 2015.
The Eagles own 23 Outdoor MAC Championships, which are the most in conference history. The most recent title came in 2015, while the Green and White also took home the crown in 2014. On the campus of Ball State University two years ago, EMU totaled 205 points to defeat Akron, while the 2014 version saw Eastern tally 198.5 points.
Last year, the Green and White finished second, amassing a total of 160 points, while Akron edged out EMU for the title with 166 points. Eastern claimed a total of six event titles throughout the three-day competition, with then-redshirt junior Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio - Maumee) securing a pair of them after winning both the 3000m steeplechase and the 5000m run. Fellow distance runner, then-redshirt sophomore Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich. - Mason), also snagged the 10000m crown in the early morning hours of day two after the original race was canceled due to inclement weather.
Then-freshman Derek Ziegenfuss (Allentown, Pa. - Parkland) broke the program record in the javelin throw, winning the event with a career-best throw of 64.28 meters/ 210 feet 11-inches to rewrite the EMU record books. Additionally, Solomon Simmons walked away with the decathlon crown for the second consecutive season, while then-junior Tyler Brown (Findlay, Ohio - Findlay) won the 400m dash.
Following the meet, Fink was named MVP, while Ziegenfuss reeled in Men's Field Freshman Performer of the Year honors. In total, five Eagles were named First Team All-MAC based on their performances throughout the conference championship. Additionally, a trio of Green and White student-athletes also earned second team honors.
Going into this year's MAC Championships, the Eagles hold onto a number of top-five marks in the conference. Junior Leighton Antonio (Hudson, Ohio - Hudson) ranks No. 4 in the 100m, while he is also No. 1 in the MAC in the 200m.
