The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped both ends of a double header to Mid-American Conference leader Kent State University, Saturday afternoon, May 6, at Oestrike Stadium. EMU (18-29, 9-8 MAC) dropped game one by a 4-2 tally, and fell 9-4 to the Golden Flashes (30-13, 14-3 MAC) in the night cap.

Game One: Kent State 4, Eastern Michigan 2

EMU got stout pitching, but couldn't tally enough offense to get the job done in game one. Starting pitcher senior Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) took a tough loss after giving up three earned runs in 7.2 innings while striking out eight. Junior Justin McMurtrey (Redding, Calif.-Shasta (Butte C.C.)) went the final 1.1 innings without giving up a base runner.

Offensively, EMU tallied six hits, led by a two-hit effort from senior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra), his 14th such effort of the season.

Kent State was the first to strike with an unearned run in the second inning after a throwing error. They tacked on another in the third with a two-out single, making it 2-0 Golden Flashes in the third inning. One more run was added in the fourth on a solo home run, putting EMU in a 3-0 hole before even getting its first hit.

EMU got the bats going in the fourth, notching its first hit with a single from Montgomery. Kent got the next two outs, but Eastern had some two-out magic with two more singles, the latter an RBI base knock from sophomore Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern), to get the Eagles on the board, and make it 3-1 into the fifth.

Following a clean fifth, KSU put the deficit back at three in the sixth on another two-out single, putting it at 4-1 into the final three frames. On the mound, Delaplane powered through the seventh, notching in his third scoreless inning of the game to keep it close into the eighth.

He returned in the eighth, getting the first two batters, the second via his eighth strikeout, but his high pitch count chased him from the game after 7.2 innings. The bullpen was able to get the final out though, keeping it 4-1.

In the bottom of the eighth, EMU manufactured a run after back-to-back singles to lead it off. With runners on the corners and no outs, redshirt senior Mike Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) got the RBI groundout to make it a two-run ballgame. Despite the early baserunners, Kent locked it down to keep any more runs from scoring. In the ninth, Eastern went three-up, three-down to seal the defeat in game one.

Game Two: Kent State 9, Eastern Michigan 4

Eastern got a little more luck with the offense in game two, springing for its four runs on the same amount of hits, six. Leading the way this time was Mioduszewski, who smacked two doubles in the game to go along with three RBIs. He now has 33 doubles for his EMU career, which ranks tied for 21st all-time.

Game two started off the same as game one, as KSU grabbed the lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly. Despite getting the bases loaded later in the inning, starting pitcher junior Brad Allen (Manchester, Mich.-Manchester (Jackson College)) battled back to keep it 1-0.

EMU answered back in the third inning after a leadoff walk to freshman Drake Peggs (Knightstown, Ind.-Knightstown Community). The next hitter, Mioduszewski, smoked a double in the gap, scoring Peggs from first, and tying the contest at one each.

The Eagles went on to take their first lead of the day the very next inning. Another double, this time from redshirt senior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw), placed him on second with one out. One batter later, freshman Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) smacked a ball to short that was bobbled, allowing Gill to come around and score, making it 2-1 Eagles through four.

KSU had the immediate response though, loading the bases up with one out in the top half of the fifth. After a pitching change, a balk call and sacrifice fly put Kent State back on top, 3-2, midway through the game. In the sixth, Kent State exploded for four more runs on six hits to take a five-run advantage, 7-2, into the seventh.

Two more KSU runners crossed the plate in the eighth inning on three hits, making it a 9-2 ballgame with two more trips to the plate for EMU. They got a pair back in the ninth inning on a two-RBI double from Mioduszewski, his second on the day, but the rally was too little, too late, and Kent closed out the 9-4 victory.

EMU and KSU will get back into action for the series finale from Oestrike Stadium tomorrow, May 7. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
