Eastern tallied 11 hits and only allowed one earned run
DEKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team got back on track with a big 9-2 victory in the series opener over Northern Illinois University, Friday afternoon, May 12, at McKinzie Field. The Eagles (19-31, 10-9 MAC) used a balance of clutch hitting and shut down pitching to get its MAC record back above .500 and match its conference win total from last season.
Eastern continued its offensive momentum from the midweek game, clubbing 11 hits to score nine runs. Leading the way was sophomore Drake Lubin (West Bloomfield, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern), who had a career-high three hits to go along with two RBIs. Also with a solid day was fellow sophomore Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern), who had two hits and two RBIs, including an RBI double.
On the mound, senior Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) earned his third win of the season after going the first six innings, only allowing five hits and one run while striking out three. In relief, sophomore Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice) and senior Kevin Shul (Albuquerque, N.M.-Albuquerque Academy (College of Southern Nevada)) combined to go the final three innings, only allowing one unearned run and striking out one each.
The Eagles took the early lead in the second inning, capitalizing on a Huskie (15-32, 9-10 MAC) miscue. With two outs, Lubin singled, and freshman Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) reached on an error, making it runners on the corners for freshman Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline). The first baseman kept the two-out rally going with the RBI single to center, making it 1-0 early on.
NIU responded with a solo homer in the bottom of the second, but Eastern battled back ahead in the third, getting three more runs on more NIU miscues. An error led off the frame, followed by a double from redshirt senior Mike Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter), making it second and third with no outs. The first runner crossed on an RBI groundout from senior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra), giving back the lead to EMU.
After another error on a bunt made it runners on the corners, senior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek Colby C.C.)) had the second RBI on another groundout. The third Eagle runner scored on the next at bat, as Lubin singled in a run, putting the tally at 4-1.
Eastern kept the offense churning in the fourth, getting another on an RBI double from Schuemann. After a single from Owings, his second of the day, Schuemann cranked a double in the right center gap to score Owings from first, putting EMU up four, 5-1.
EMU scored in its fourth consecutive inning in the fifth, getting more two-out magic from Lubin. After a single and advancement on a wild pitch from redshirt senior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw), he broke for third, and was singled in by Lubin on his third hit and second RBI of the day, making it 6-1.
On the mound, Delaplane was solid through five despite the solo homer. The righty only allowed four other hits while striking out three to keep NIU to one run into the sixth inning. In the sixth, he yielded his third walk, but it was erased on EMU's second double play of the afternoon, keeping it a five-run contest into the final three frames.
Feldman came on in relief in the seventh, and continued to mow down NIU batters, only allowing one runner, but otherwise keeping the lead steady into the eighth. In the top of the eighth, EMU tacked on some insurance, first on a sacrifice fly from Mioduszewski, who later scored on the fourth NIU error of the day, setting EMU up with an 8-1 lead into the final two Huskie at bats.
NIU got a run back in the eighth, an unearned run that came around after a lead off error, putting EMU's lead at six with one inning to go. Eastern got even more insurance in the ninth, as Schuemann delivered his second RBI of the day with a bloop single to make it 9-2 into NIU's last at bat. There, Shul went three-up, three-down to seal the seven-run victory.
Eastern and NIU will get back into action tomorrow, May 13, for game two of the series from McKinzie Field. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. ET.
