Eagles Clinch Series over NIU with 7-1 Victory

5/13/2017 5:26:00 PM | Baseball

Junior Brad Allen had another stellar outing in the win

DEKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team earned its fourth Mid-American Conference series win of the season with a 7-1 victory over Northern Illinois University Saturday afternoon, May 13, at McKinzie Field.

It was another stellar start from junior Brad Allen (Manchester, Mich.-Manchester (Jackson College)) who earned his second win of the season after going seven innings, only allowing three hits and one run while striking out two. In relief, freshman James Harness (Huber Heights, Ohio-Wayne) was almost as unhittable, only allowing two baserunners on two walks, striking out one.

The Eagle (20-31, 11-9 MAC) offense gave Allen the run support he's looked for all year, notching double digit hits once again with 10 knocks, including five extra base hits from five different players. Leading the output was a pair of seniors, Mike Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) and John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra) who each had homers. Mioduszewski had his fifth of the season, a solo job, while Montgomery clubbed his team-leading 11th, a two-run bomb. They are both in the top-25 for all-time EMU homers with 17 and 19 respectively.

Elsewhere, fellow senior Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-Gilbert C.C.)) had a two-hit, two-RBI day, his team-leading 16th multi-hit game of the season. Finally, freshman Drake Peggs (Knightstown, Ind.-Knightstown Community) had a two-hit day, including his second triple of the season.

Eastern got the scoring started in the top of the first with a bang as Mioduszewski crushed a solo home run to deep left field that hit NIU's football stadium. His fifth of the season gave Eastern the early 1-0 advantage.

NIU (15-33, 9-11 MAC) tied the game back up in the bottom of the second with a two-out single, knotting it up at one into the third inning. Eastern stormed back ahead in the fourth though, getting three runs on three two-out hits. With two away, freshman Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) singled to bring up Peggs. The second baseman smacked his second triple of the season to left center, giving EMU the lead back.

Following a walk and steal from sophomore Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern), runners stood on second and third for the top of the order. Peterson was there, singling in both to put Eastern ahead by three, 4-1.

In between gaining the lead, Allen settled in on the mound, retiring ten straight in innings three through five, to keep Eastern ahead into the sixth. His streak went to 12 in the sixth before an NIU single, but got the next batter to groundout to keep it rolling into the seventh.

EMU tacked on some big insurance runs in the top of the seventh, going for three more once again with two outs. A walk to Mioduszewski got it started, and following him, Montgomery parked his team-leading 11th homer of the season, a shot into the trees in right field. The next batter, freshman Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline), kept the line moving with a double in the gap, and one batter later, he came in to score on an NIU error, putting EMU ahead, 7-1.

Allen continued to roll in the seventh, going three-up, three down for the third time in the game, keeping Eastern comfortably ahead. In the eighth, Harness entered on in relief and got into a little bit of trouble, loading up the bases with one out, but he pitched out of it, getting the last batter looking, maintaining the steady Eagle lead. In the ninth, despite a walk, Harness induced a game-ending 5-4-3 double play, sealing the 7-1 victory.

EMU will now go for the Mothers Day sweep in the series finale tomorrow, May 14. First pitch from McKinzie Field is set for 1 p.m. ET.
