The Cardinals took the doubles point before winning five singles matches
MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University tennis team dropped its fourth match in a row Friday afternoon, April 7, when it traveled to Ball State University. The Eagles (6-13, 1-4 MAC) fell, 6-1, to the Cardinals (17-2, 5-0 MAC) as they grabbed just one singles victory.
"Playing Ball State at full strength is a tough task, let alone with the injuries we have," remarked Head Coach Ryan Ray. "I hope we get healthier for next week and we will be ready for Toledo."
In doubles, juniors Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco) and Renu Sharma (Fardabad, India) teamed up at No. 3 and fell, 6-1, before Ball State notched the doubles point when EMU's No. 1 duo of junior Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikani) and redshirt junior Maria Paula Ribero (Bucaramanga, Colombia) came up short, 6-4, to Audrey Berger and Julia Sbircea. At No. 2, juniors Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) and Anna Veleva (Sofia, Bulgaria) were trailing, 5-4, when the doubles point was decided.
Moving on to singles, the Eagles continued to struggle. BSU's Rebecca Herrington dispatched Veleva, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4, while Barcelo Almoyna dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision at No. 5 to Berger. Martinovska was next, and fell 6-2, 6-3, to Toni Ormond at No. 2 singles, which gave Ball State the deciding fourth point. It was just Ribero who was able to come away with a victory for the Green and White. After defeating Isabelle Dohanics 6-4 in the opening set, she dropped the second, 6-2. With the match being decided, the No. 3 singles match went into a pro set to decide the winner. Ribero walked away with a 10-8 victory to give EMU its only win of the day.
Eastern Michigan returns to action Saturday, April 15, when it travels to Toledo, Ohio for a matchup with the Rockets. The match is slated for 1 p.m.
