NASHPORT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – With 36 holes in the books at the 2017 Mid-American Conference Championship, the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team sits in fourth-place with a 596 (303-293). No. 12 ranked Kent State University leads the way after posting a one-under 575 (287-288) on the par 72, 7,243 yard Virtues Golf Club course.
The Golden Flashes hold a seven-stroke lead heading into day two, that total includes holding down three of the tournament's top eight slots. Ball State (582) is in second place followed by Toledo (589), EMU (596), Miami (597), Ohio (599), Akron (604), Northern Illinois (607), and Bowling Green (609).
Four of the five Eagles are ranked in the top 30, including senior Kyle Rodes (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) who is tied for third with a four-under 140 (69-71). The Plymouth, Mich. native notched a three-under 69 in the opening round before notching another round under-par. The back-to-back sub-par rounds upped Rodes' total to 17 on the year.
Senior Philippe Weppernig (Lucerne, Switzerland-Kantonsschule Alpenquai Luzern-Owens C.C.) notched a 150 (75-75) for 17th. Senior Jared Multer (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview-Grand Rapids C.C.) is tied for 29th with a 154 (82-72) and Nic Ross (Dundas, Ontario, Canada-Highland Secondary) is tied for 32nd with a 155 (77-78). Rounding out the EMU lineup, sophomore Beau Breault (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) fired rounds of 83 and 75 for 38th-place.
KSU's Gisli Sveinbergsson and BSU's Johnny Watts share the lead on the field with a six-under 138.
The third round of the 2017 MAC Men's Golf Championship will get underway at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 29, with the final round scheduled for Sunday, April 30, at 7:45 a.m. For live scoring, visit http://www.golfstat.com.
