Late Rally Downs EMU in Series Opener Against Buffalo

4/28/2017 6:54:00 PM | Baseball

The Eagles led 3-1 before a five-run eighth

BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped the series opener to the University at Buffalo, 6-3, Friday afternoon, April 28, at Audubon Field. The Bulls (13-25, 5-8 MAC) used a five-run eighth inning to stun the Eagles (17-25, 8-5 MAC).

EMU got another quality start from senior Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) after he went the first seven innings, only allowing one run on five hits with nine strikeouts. That put his career K total at 184, which ranks 11th on the all-time EMU list.

Offensively, EMU out-hit UB 10-7. Two of the three Eagle runs came off the bat of sophomore Drake Lubin (West Bloomfield, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern), his third two-RBI game of the season. Three EMU players also finished with two-hit days.

Following a scoreless first inning, EMU got on the board in the second. The Eagles loaded the bases with one out after two singles and a walk, bringing up Lubin. The outfielder drove in one on an RBI groundout, making it 1-0 early on.

On the bump, Delaplane was almost unhittable through three, only surrendering one hit while striking out four, to keep it 1-0 into the fourth. In the fourth frame, it was Lubin who delivered an RBI once again, knocking in his second with an RBI base hit after freshman Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) was advanced to second following a single, doubling the lead to 2-0.

Delaplane notched two more K's in a scoreless fourth, and EMU continued to hit in the fifth. After two walks and a wild pitch, runners stood on the corners for sophomore John Rensel Jr. (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallamdge). The first baseman notched his first hit of the day with an RBI single, extending the Eagle lead to 3-0 in the middle of the fifth. Delaplane worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth, keeping it a three-run game into the sixth.

The Bulls were able to get a run in the sixth inning on a leadoff home run to cut the deficit to 3-1. UB went on to load the bases with no outs, but Delaplane pitched his way out of it to keep the two-run game into the seventh.

Delaplane soldiered on through the seventh, stranding a pair of runners by striking out the side and taking it to the eighth. UB then exploded for five runs in the eighth frame off the EMU bullpen to leap ahead, 6-3, into EMU's final turn at bat. Despite getting the first two runners on, the Eagles could not plate any more runs, sealing the 6-3 final.

The series from Buffalo will resume tomorrow, April 29, with game two of the three-game set. First pitch from Audubon Field is set for 1 p.m.
