Eagles Fall in Game Two of Series to Buffalo

4/29/2017 4:34:00 PM | Baseball

EMU never led after a two-run first inning

BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team couldn't get things going in a 5-2 defeat to the University at Buffalo, Saturday afternoon, April 29, at Audubon Field. The Eagles (17-26, 8-6 MAC) trailed 2-0 after one inning and couldn't generate what it needed for a win.

The offense was able to club seven hits on the day, led by a three-hit performance from senior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra), his team-leading sixth such game of the season. Redshirt senior Mike Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a double.

On the mound, starting pitcher junior Brad Allen (Manchester, Mich.-Manchester (Jackson College)) was saddled with a tough loss after going the first five innings, only allowing the two runs with four strikeouts. In relief, junior Luke DeVenney (Des Moines, Iowa-Dowling Catholic) had a solid outing, keeping EMU in the game in the late innings. He went the final 2.2 innings, only allowing three baserunners on two walks and a hit by pitch, but only faced one more than the minimum after two double plays.

The Bulls (14-25, 6-8 MAC) struck first in the bottom of the first, tagging EMU for a pair of runs on two hits and a wild pitch to make it 2-0 early.

From there, both pitchers made it through the next three innings with no damage. Allen would need to escape two bases loaded jams in the third and fourth, but was able to, maintaining the 2-0 deficit.

EMU got on the board in the fifth, manufacturing a run on crafty base running. After a walk to sophomore Drake Lubin (West Bloomfield, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) and a single from Montgomery, runners stood on the corners with two outs. Montgomery then attempted to steal second, which prompted a throw, and Lubin was able to scamper home to make it 2-1 mid way through the contest.

Following a quick fifth inning from Allen, Buffalo would break out the bats on the EMU bullpen in the sixth inning, going for three runs to make it 5-1 into the final three frames.

The Eagles chipped away in the eighth inning, getting one run back on three hits. After singles from Montgomery and freshman Drake Peggs (Knightstown, Ind.-Knightstown Community), redshirt senior Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-Gilbert C.C.)) ripped a single just under the diving shortstop, scoring Montgomery and making it 5-2. Despite having runners on the corners after that with one out, Buffalo maintained the three-run advantage into the bottom of the eighth.

After another clean inning from DeVenney, Eastern would go three-up, three down to end the game.

EMU will look to avoid the series sweep in game three of the series tomorrow, April 30. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
