Eagles Split for Penn Relays and Gina Relays

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - After having the team compete together in Allendale last week, the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team will split up for the prestigious Penn Relays, April 27-29, in Philadelphia, Pa., and the Gina Relays, April 27-29, in Hillsdale, Mich.
Last week, the Green and White traveled to Allendale, Mich. and the campus of Grand Valley State for the Al Owens Classic, April 21-22. Day one of the meet was highlighted by sophomore Derek Ziegenfuss (Allentown, Pa. - Parkland) winning the javelin with a throw of 63.65 meters/ 208 feet 10-inches, while redshirt senior Anthony Jones (Sandusky, Ohio - Sandusky) took third in the hammer. The Eagles secured a number of top-three finishes on day two, including an event victory in the 400m dash in which Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich. - Clinton) clocked in with a career-best time of 47.49 seconds. Junior Leighton Antonio (Hudson, Ohio - Hudson) had a strong day as well, claiming second in both the 100m dash finals and the 200m dash.
The Eagles competed at the Gina Relays last year, and had some solid performances. Wayne Blanchard secured second in the 100m dash, while Underwood nabbed the bronze in the 200m dash. Sophomore Elijah Barber (Columbus, Ohio - Eastmoor Academy) placed second in the 400m hurdles, and fellow sophomore Cameron Hart (Columbus, Ohio - Bishop Hartley) took home silver in the high jump. Finally, Solomon Simmons snagged third in the 110m hurdles championship, sophomore Micah Peters (York, Ontario - Vaughn Road Academy) finished second in the triple jump, and sophomore Zach Harkey (Huron, Ohio - Huron) took second in the discus throw.
Eastern most recently took part in the Penn Relays back in 2014. There, Daryl Smith secured an event victory in the 3000m steeplechase, clocking in at 9:05.43 to take home the gold. Additionally, a pair of Eagles ran in the 10000m run. Redshirt junior Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium - Stedelijk Lyceum Paardenmarkt Luchthaven), who was a freshman at the time, snagged 16th in 30:24.32, while Harry Dixon took 32nd.
Both the Penn Relays and the Gina Relays can be followed from home with a live stream. The Penn Relays kick off the collegiate portion of the meet on Thursday, April 27, with the women's 400m hurdles championship at 10 a.m., while field events begin just before at 9 a.m. with the women's discus. On Friday, April 28, the men's 400m hurdles championship and men's discus throw gets the day started at 9 a.m., while Saturday's collegiate portion starts at 9 a.m. with the men's triple jump.
