FAIRFAX STATION, Va. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University rowing team had a solid day of racing at the George Mason Invite, Sunday, April 23, in Fairfax Station, Va, capturing its third straight Harvey Cup by finishing ahead of the University at Buffalo in two of three races.
It marks the fifth and final time EMU has won the trophy, as Buffalo will be discontinuing its program at the end of the season. The Harvey Cup is named in recognition and memory of the University at Buffalo's former Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator Nan Harvey, who passed away in September of 2003 after courageously battling cancer for over three years. EMU and Buffalo are the only Mid-American Conference institutions to sponsor rowing as a varsity sport. As a result, both joined the Colonial Athletic Association beginning in the 2012-13 season to compete for a league title and both race each season to determine the unofficial "MAC Champion."
"It's sad that this was the last Harvey Cup but we are excited that it is coming back and staying at Eastern Michigan," Head Coach Kemp Savage said.
In total, EMU ran three boats in six races, finishing with one win on the day, as well as two second place finishes. The invite had a unique format this season, a conference challenge between the Colonial Athletic Association, Atlantic-10, and Big 12. Three boats from each conference went head-to-head in a heat within their own conference to determine which boat from which conference would race in the "A", "B", and "C" finals.
Based on finishes in the respective races, each team was assigned a point total to determine the eventual conference winner of the GMU Invite. In the end, the Big 12 took home the title with 52 points, followed by the A-10 with 30 and the CAA with 26.
For Eastern, their lone race win on the day came in the 2V8+ CAA heat, as the Eagles' boat claimed victory with a time 7:02.7 time, coming in two and 18 second ahead of fellow CAA rivals, Delaware and Buffalo. In the ensuing "A" championship race, EMU went up against the Big 12's Kansas and the A-10's George Washington, ultimately coming in third with a 7:13.8 time.
Elsewhere, EMU's 1V8+ boat started its day with a second place time in the CAA heat with a time of 6:48.6, coming in ahead of Buffalo by 21 seconds, and finishing just behind Delaware by just 1.3 seconds. Rowing in the "B" championship race, EMU went up against Old Dominion in the Big 12 and Dayton from the A-10. The 1V8+ turned in a time of 6:56.7, 11 seconds from first and five from second to take third.
Finally, EMU had its Varsity 4+ on the water for a pair of races. In the CAA heat, EMU ended up in third with a time of 8:28.1 to qualify for the "C" championship race. In the "C" final, EMU bounced back with an 8:17.7 time to claim second place, defeating the George Mason boat by 20 seconds, and finishing behind the Big 12 boat from Old Dominion.
"We had a good day of racing at the George Mason invite, even being in the middle of exams the athletes were able to get focused on rowing," Savage explained. "The 2V had some good racing this morning, while the 1V was experiencing some growing pains. We are looking forward to getting in some good hard training this week and beginning our preparations for the CAA championship."
EMU will return to the water next weekend, April 29-30, for a pair of events, beginning with a trip up to East Lansing for a day of racing against the Spartans of Michigan State University. Races are set to begin at 9 a.m.
