Eagles Claim Pair of Top-Three Finishes to Complete Jesse Owens Invite

COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field time completed the Jesse Owens Invitational today, April 22, down in Columbus, Ohio. Similar to yesterday, the Eagles had some strong performances on day two of action on the campus of Ohio State.
Eastern tallied a total of three top-10 finishes in the sprints. The 100m dash saw both freshman Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio – West Geauga) and sophomore Jessica Harris (Slidell, La. – Slidell) secure top-10 spots. Mason edged out Harris, clocking in with a personal-best time of 11.87 seconds to take eighth, while Harris nabbed 10th in 11.89 seconds. Junior Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa. – Hempfield Area) had a strong day in the 200m dash, taking home the bronze after crossing the finish line in a career-best 23.86 seconds. Finally, Jones was also EMU's top sprinter in the 400m dash, as she claimed ninth in 56.03 seconds.
Three Eagles competed in the 800m run, with all three finishing within the top-20. Junior Rebekah Branham (Circleville, Ohio – Circleville) took home eighth, clocking in at 2:12.15, while sophomore Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind. – Zionsville Community) just missed her personal-best with a time of 2:14.17 to take 15th. Finally, junior Claire Mesa (Rockford, Ill. – Rockford Lutheran) posted a career-best time of 2:15.21 to nab 18th.
The Eagles were able to secure ninth in the 4x400m relay, as the group of freshman Micah Johnston, junior Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich. – Chippewa Valley), Branham, and senior Dayna Hurd (Carson, Calif. – Carson) secured ninth with a time of 3:59.15. Hurd also competed in the hurdles, claiming 20th in the 100m hurdles and 11th in the 400m hurdles, respectively.
Freshman Gianna Salzbrunn (North Aurora, Ill. – Montini Catholic) posted a career-best mark in the long jump, finishing with a jump of 4.92 meters/ 16 feet 1.75-inches. The triple jump saw junior Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia - Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1) take home the silver, as she finished with a mark of 12.55 meters/ 41 feet 2.25-inches. Finally, senior Megan Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio – Woodmoore) nabbed 10th in the discus with a launch of 40.39 meters/ 132 feet 6-inches.
Next week, the team will split up once again. The Green and White will be spread out among a pair of meets, as the squad will compete at both the Penn Relays, April 27-29, and the Gina Relays, April 27-29.
