Green and White Finish Second at Al Owens Classic

ALLENDALE, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team closed out the Al Owens Classic today, April 22, in Allendale, Mich. The Eagles built off of yesterday's success and finished second as a team with 82.20 points.

The Green and White found plenty of success in the sprints. Junior Leighton Antonio (Hudson, Ohio – Hudson) and freshman Sean Beckom (Saginaw, Mich. – Heritage) both qualified into the 100m dash finals. Antonio turned in a very strong performance in the finals, nabbing the silver with a career-best time of 10.57 seconds, while Beckom took ninth. Antonio added to his day with a second-place finish in the 200m dash, as he clocked in at 21.80 seconds to take home another silver. Finally, sophomore Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich. – Clinton) finished atop the podium in the 400m dash, as he crossed the finish line in a personal-best 47.49 seconds to claim the gold.

Moving to mid-distance, freshman Roderic Wilson (Atlanta, Ga. – Blanche Ely) was the top Eagle in the 800m run, securing 15^th in 1:54.41. EMU had another top-10 finish in the 1500m run, as redshirt junior Caleb Hess (Owosso, Mich. – Owosso) took home seventh with a time of 3:58.46. Moving to the hurdles, freshman Devonte Findlay (Lauderhill, Fla. – Blanche Ely) snagged a spot in the finals, ultimately taking third with a career-best time of 14.63 seconds. Sophomore Elijah Barber (Columbus, Ohio – Eastmoor Academy) added another top-five finish in the 400m hurdles, taking fourth in 54.86 seconds.

Eastern also snagged third in the 4x100m relay, as Beckom, Antonio, Underwood, and Findlay crossed the finish line in 41.66 seconds to take the bronze. Sophomore Cameron Hart (Columbus, Ohio – Bishop Hartley) added another bronze to the haul, as he claimed third in the high jump with a mark of 1.99 meters/ 6 feet 6.25-inches. The trend continued in the pole vault, as freshman Colin Etchen (Edgerton, Ohio – Edgerton) nabbed third with a vault of 4.91 meters/ 16 feet 1.25-inches, which was a personal-beset.

Finally, redshirt sophomore Zach Purcilly (Troy, Mich. – Avondale) tallied a sixth-place finish in the shot put, posting a mark of 15.49 meters/ 50 feet 10-inches. Sophomore Zach Harkey (Huron, Ohio – Huron) built off his success from yesterday, as he finished fifth in the discus with a career-best throw of 49.90 meters/ 163 feet 8-inches. In fact, his mark was also No. 7 in the EMU record books.

The Eagles will split up once again next week, as some of the squad will head to the Penn Relays, April 27-29, while others will attend the Gina Relays, April 27-29.
