Eagles Drop Back and Forth Affair in Extras to WMU

4/22/2017 5:19:00 PM | Baseball

It was the fifth walk off loss for EMU this season

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team had its five-game Mid-American Conference winning streak snapped in a tough 4-3 extra innings defeat to Western Michigan University Saturday afternoon, April 22, at Robert J. Bobb Stadium. It was the fifth time EMU (17-22, 8-3 MAC) lost on a walk off this season.

It was a back and forth affair, as neither team had more than a one run advantage throughout. The lead changed four times during the contest. In the end, it was a walk off squeeze bunt that gave WMU (15-19, 5-9 MAC) the deciding run.

The Eagle offense generated double-digit hits for the fourth time in the last five games, pounding out 10 on the afternoon. Leading the output was once again redshirt senior Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-Gilbert C.C.)) who remained red hot with his fourth straight multi-hit game, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored.

Also with a multi-hit game was redshirt senior Mike Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) with a pair of singles. The hits brought his EMU career total to 177, which puts his name in the record books, ranking tied for 25th on the all-time list. Generating a majority of the offense was senior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)), who finished with a two-RBI game on one hit.

On the hill, senior Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario-Bishop Macdonnell Catholic) kept EMU in it and sent it to extras with 2.2 scoreless innings down the stretch, only giving up one hit. He has not allowed a run in his last 14.2 innings.

The Eagles got the scoring started in the first after runners got to the corners with one out. After singles from Mioduszewski and senior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra) placed them at first and third, Stidham drove a ball out to center that was deep enough to score Mioduszewski on a sacrifice fly and make it 1-0.

Starting pitcher junior Brad Allen (Manchester, Mich.-Manchester (Jackson College)) cruised through his first three innings, only allowing a pair of base runners, to keep it a 1-0 game into the fourth. There, WMU broke through with an RBI double to tie the contest at one after four innings.

Following a scoreless fifth, EMU regained the lead in the sixth, manufacturing a run on a pair of hits. Peterson and Mioduszewski went back-to-back with singles to lead off the frame. One batter later, Stidham was there again, this time coming through with an RBI fielder's choice, to make it 2-1. WMU wasted no time responding this time though, tying the contest at two apiece in the bottom of the sixth.

In the seventh, WMU was able to gain its first lead of the game, getting a run on a wild pitch and taking a 3-2 edge into the final two innings. In the top of the eighth, EMU answered back with a bases loaded RBI single from freshman Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) to tie the back-and-forth tilt back up at three. The knock extended his hitting streak to 12 games.

WMU had a chance to take another lead in the bottom of the eighth, loading up the bases with two outs. Beaton, who was summoned from the pen earlier that inning, got a groundout to end the threat and maintain the tie into the ninth.

The Eagles had runners on first and third in the ninth, but WMU escaped without yielding the lead. On the hill, Beaton got through the ninth and 10th innings without much trouble to send it to the 11th.

In the 11th frame, WMU was able to capitalize on a couple hits that placed runners on the corners with one out. The Broncos did what they do best, bunting home the game winning run, and walking off with the 4-3 win.

Game three of the series from Robert J. Bobb Stadium will be played Sunday, April 23. The rubber match will commence at 1 p.m.
