Michelle Kriegshauser broke the program record for career doubles
LONG BEACH, Calif. (EMUEagles.com) – Senior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) broke the program record for career doubles as the Eastern Michigan University softball team posted a sweep on day one of the Louisville Slugger Invitational, March 9. The Eagles (8-6) notched a pair of one-run wins over Boston University, 4-3, and Long Beach State University, 2-1.
Game #1: Eastern Michigan 4, Boston 3
Two Eagles picked up multi-hit efforts behind a 10-hit outing for the Green and White. Senior Taylor Wagner (Marshalltown, Iowa-Marshalltown) went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI, while sophomore Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.
Junior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) garnered the start, picking up her career-best fifth win of the season. Trujillo tossed 6.0 innings, allowing just five hits. Meanwhile, senior Abbie Minsker (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) recorded her first save of the season.
Sophomore Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) broke the game open with a one-run double in the first inning, providing Trujillo with early run support. Akles battled at the plate, winning a seven-pitch at bat, before lacing a double to bring in Kreigshauser.
The Green and White plated three more runs on four hits in the second. Logan led the frame off with a bunt single, before junior Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) reached on a fielder's choice. A single by freshman Ariana Chretien (Commerce, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) put two on with one out for sophomore Lucy Lopez (Bakersfield, Calif.-Stockdale). Entering the game with six consecutive hits, Lopez registered her seventh knock in as many at bats, clearing the bases and pushing EMU's lead to 3-0. After a BU pitching change, Wagner extended her reached base streak to 10 games with an RBI single.
Eastern Michigan's 4-0 lead held until the top of the seventh when the Terriers mounted a comeback. Loading the bases with nobody out to bring the tying run to the plate, BU brought two runs in on a hit by pitch and a walk, ending Trujillo's day. Minsker entered in relief and yielded a sacrifice fly, before getting a line out and a pop out to secure the win, 4-3.
Game #2: Eastern Michigan 2, Long Beach State 1
Sophomore Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) turned in her best outing of the season, tossing a complete game to register her first win of the season. Miranda fanned two over 7.0 innings of work, while allowing 10 hits.
Offensively, Eastern made the most of its five hits to overcome Long Beach's 10-hit game. Five different Eagles recorded hits for the Green and White, with Wagner pushing her reached base streak to 11 consecutive games. The senior catcher has reached base safely in 12 of EMU's 14 games this season.
Kriegshauser kicked off the game with a leadoff double, the 45th of her career, to become Eastern Michigan's career doubles leader. The New Lenox, Ill. native came around to score a few at bats later, as junior Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) laced an RBI single to right field.
EMU's slim 1-0 lead held until the fourth inning as pitchers on both sides continued to work their way out of jams. The Green and White doubled its lead, 2-0, on an RBI single by Hostetler in the top half of the fourth, before LBSU got a run back in the fifth to cut Eastern's edge to 2-1.
The game got interesting as in the bottom of the seventh as Long Beach's leadoff hitter reached with a single, but Miranda buckled in and pitched her way around it. The California native induced a pop out, before Olmos turned a game-ending double play to give EMU a 2-1 win.
Eastern continues play at the Louisville Slugger Invitational tomorrow, March 10, against Longwood University and No. 10/11 UCLA. The Eagles' game against the Lancers is set for 12 p.m. ET.
