Eastern wraps up its California trip against San Diego State, March 11
LONG BEACH, Calif. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team's offense never got going as the Eagles (8-8) dropped two games on day two of the Louisville Slugger Invitational Friday, March 10. EMU's defensive miscues were costly in an 8-1 loss to Longwood University, while No. 10/11 UCLA overpowered the Eagles, 8-0, in five innings.
Game #1: Longwood 8, Eastern Michigan 1
Eastern Michigan's offense totaled seven hits spread out amongst four Eagles. Junior Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) went 3-for-3 with EMU's lone RBI. Sophomore Lucy Lopez (Bakersfield, Calif.-Stockdale) also recorded a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 at the plate and scoring Eastern's only run.
In the circle, the Green and White used three different pitchers in the game. Senior Abbie Minsker (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) was chased early, making way for relief appearances for freshman Savanah White (Visalia, Calif.-Redwood) and sophomore Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles). Minsker took the loss, moving to 2-1 on the season, while Miranda tossed four innings of two-run ball to close out the game.
An error set up the Lancers (7-10) with a three-run lead through one inning, before Longwood tacked on three more runs in the second to push its lead to 6-0.
The Eagles got on the board in the third, plating one run on three hits. Lopez singled with one out and advanced to second on senior Taylor Wagner's (Marshalltown, Iowa-Marshalltown) knock up the middle. Olmos then came through with two down, singling to the right side to bring Lopez across, cutting LU's lead to five, 6-1.
From there, Eastern failed to capitalize on opportunities, stranding six over the next four innings. The Lancers added two runs over the final four frames to hand the Eagles the 8-1 setback, snapping EMU's season-best four-game win streak.
Game #2: No. 10/11 UCLA 8, Eastern Michigan 0 (5 innings)
Senior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) tallied the only hit for Eastern Michigan, finishing the game against the Bruins 1-for-2 at the dish. Meanwhile, UCLA (17-5) cranked out nine hits, including a two-run home run.
Junior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) notched the start and was ultimately sacked with the loss, dropping her to 5-3 on the season. Trujillo went 3.2 innings, giving up three runs, two of which were earned, on five hits against a potent UCLA offense.
The Bruins jumped ahead to a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run homer, before adding one run in the third to take a 3-0 edge into the bottom half of the fifth.
Despite staying within striking distance more than four innings, EMU's lack of offense allowed UCLA to put the game away with a five-run fifth, ending the game, 8-0, in five innings.
