The Eagles were charged with a season-high five errors
FULLERTON, Calif. (EMUEagles.com) – A season-high five errors led to Eastern Michigan University's softball team's demise Saturday, March 11, as the Eagles (8-9) fell, 10-0, in five innings to San Diego State University on the final day of the Louisville Slugger Invitational.
Eastern's offense tallied five hits, with junior Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) going 2-for-2 at the plate. Hostetler was the lone Eagle to pick up multiple hits, while senior Taylor Wagner (Marshalltown, Iowa-Marshalltown), senior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central), and sophomore Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) added one hit apiece.
Junior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) came away with the loss in the circle, as errors chased her from the game after just over an inning of work. Freshman Savanah White (Visalia, Calif-Redwood) and sophomore Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) made appearances in relief. White went 1.2 innings, while Miranda tossed the final 2.1. Miranda allowed two runs on four hits, striking out one. Her K, which ended the top half of the fifth inning, was the 100th strikeout of her career.
The Aztecs plated three in the first inning, including a leadoff home run to start the game, before adding two in the second and three more in the third to push their lead to 8-0 through three frames.
After Miranda stranded two in the top of the fourth, Kriegshauser broke EMU's half of the inning open with a single. Three batters later, Hostetler singled to put two on with two outs, but a line out halted the Green and White's threat.
A two-run shot in the fifth extended SDSU's lead to 10 with EMU coming to the plate needing three runs to keep the game going. A pair of strikeouts were followed by a fly out, sending the Eagles down in order to end the game 10-0 in five innings.
Eastern Michigan returns to action next weekend, March 18-20, at the Mercer Tournament in Macon, Ga. EMU kicks off the weekend against Eastern Illinois at 10 a.m. Friday, March 18.
