PHOENIX, Ariz. (EMUEagles.com) — It has been quite the start to the spring for the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team. Saturday's final round of the GCU Invitational continued the squad's streak of exceptional play, as the team collected a third-place finish on the par 72, 7,269-yard GCU Golf Course. The Eagles tallied a final round 289 to wrap up the event with a two-day total of 848 (285-274-289). No. 21 Duke University won the tournament with a 829 (287-269-273) while Grand Canyon was second with a 835 (279-283-273).

Eastern's 54-hole tally ranks second in program history, bettered only by its last outing when the squad posted an 841 (275-277-289) at the Loyola Intercollegiate, Feb. 25-27.  Altogether, Head Coach Bruce Cunningham's crew has carded three of the program's top five single-round marks in their last six rounds played.  Yesterday's 274 was the second-lowest round in program history, topped only by a 273 (66-67-68-72) at the Georgetown Intercollegiate, Oct. 18, 2010.

Redshirt senior Jared Multer (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview-Grand Rapids C.C.) did his best to help rewrite the record books, as he finished tied with Duke's Alex Smalley for the runner-up spot. Multer posted a personal-best 204 (69-66-69) to shatter his previous low of 213 set earlier this season at EKU Intercollegiate. The 54-hole total was just one shot shy of the program record established just 19 days ago by senior Kyle Rodes (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) with a 203 (69-64 -70) at the Loyola Intercollegiate, Feb. 27.

The Battle Creek, Mich. native upped his game after a first round 69, to card a seven-under 29 on the back nine in the second round. Multer's previous low for a single round was at the Rutherford Intercollegiate, when he notched a 68 on the opening day, April 18-19, 2015.

Host Grand Canyon's Billy Comeaux was the medalist with a 10-under 203 (67-68-68).

Sophomore Beau Breault (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) picked up his first career top-five finish with a final round 70 for a three round total of 208 (72-66-70). The Howell, Mich. product's tally was also a career-low, bettering a 212 set at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic, Oct. 9-11, 2016.

Rodes finished with a round of 75 to tie for 37th, while Nic Ross (Dundas, Ontario, Canada-Highland Secondary) had a 220 (72-73-75) for 47th. Rounding out the lineup, senior Philippe Weppernig (Lucerne, Switzerland-Kantonsschule Alpenquai Luzern-Owens C.C. added a 59th-place finish with a 222 (72-72-78).

Eastern Michigan returns to action March 27-28 at the First Tee Collegiate Classic in Little Rock, Ark.
