Day one of the Meyo Invite and the Hillsdale Classic are now in the books

SOUTH BEND, Ind. & HILLSDALE, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team wrapped up a solid first day of competition at the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind. and the Hillsdale Classic in Hillsdale, Mich. today, Feb. 3. The highlight of the day came in South Bend, where EMU walked away with the 5000m title.
Beginning with the Meyo Invitational, a trio of sprinters competed in the 60m dash. Junior Leighton Antonio (Hudson, Ohio – Hudson) led the way for EMU, clocking in with a personal-best time of 6.85 seconds to take 13th and earn a spot in the semifinals. Sophomore Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich. – Clinton) and junior Brandon Bolden (Solon, Ohio – Solon) also had solid races, posting times of 7.02 and 7.06, respectively.
The same group also ran in the 200m dash, this time with Underwood pacing Eastern. The sophomore finished seventh in the race with a career-best time of 21.69 seconds, while Antonio was just behind him in 10th with a time of 21.79, which was also a personal-best. Eastern also had a runner participate in the 600m run, as freshman Dan Kuhn (Erie, Pa. – Harbor Creek) claimed 22nd with a career-best time of 1:22.74.
EMU's top event of the day came in the form of the 5000m, as redshirt junior Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich. – Mason) won the event with a career-best time of 14:21.28. Additionally, redshirt junior Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium - Stedelijk Lyceum Paardenmarkt Luchthaven) finished an impressive fifth, crossing the finish line in 14:30.61.
Like the 60m dash, Eastern had three hurdlers take part in the 60m hurdles. Freshman Devonte Findlay (Lauderhill, Fla. – Blanche Ely) was the team's top finisher, earning a spot in the semifinals after taking 13th with a time of 8.26 seconds. Fellow freshman Ivan Suazo (Brooklyn, N.Y. – Westland) also had a strong race, ranking 17th in 8.31 seconds to earn a semifinals berth. Rounding out the trio was sophomore Frank Douglas (Mansfield, Ohio – Madison Comprehensive), who clocked in at 8.37 to take 19th.
Finally, sophomore Cameron Hart (Columbus, Ohio – Bishop Hartley) represented the Green and White in the long jump. Hart finished with a mark of 7.11 meters/ 23 feet 4-inches, which was good for ninth in a tough field of competitors.
Moving to the Hillsdale Classic, freshman Sean Beckom (Saginaw, Mich. - Heritage) and redshirt senior Nick James (Troy, Ohio - Troy) both comepted in the 60m dash and the 200m dash. Beckom turned in a 10th-place finish in the 60m dash, clocking in at a career-best 6.96 seconds to take 10th and earn a spot in the finals. The pair also finisied in the top-15 of the 200m, with Beckom bringing home 12th and James nabbing 14th with times of 22.83 and 23.00, respectively.
Sophomore Elijah Barber (Columbus, Ohio - Eastmoor Academy) was the team's top performer in the 60m hurdles prelims, as he finished 18th, crossing the finish line in 8.74 seconds. In the pole vault, freshman Colin Etchen (Edgerton, Ohio - Edgerton) had an impressive showing, taking eighth with a career-best vault of 4.65 meters/ 15 feet 3-inches. Fellow freshman Drew Lament (Lakeview, Ohio - Waynesfield-Goshen) also had a solid day, posting a personal-best mark of 4.20 meters/ 13 feet 9.25-inches.
Lament also competed in the long jump, snagging 24th with a jump of 5.86 meters/ 19 feet 2.75-inches. Finally, sophomore Zach Harkey (Huron, Ohio - Huron) paced a trio of throwers in the weight throw, taking 11th with a launch of 16.20 meters/ 53 feet 1.75-inches. Redshirt freshman Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla. - Edmond Memorial) was one spot behind him, placing 12th with a career-best throw of 16.19 meters/ 53 feet 1.5-inches.
