GOODYEAR, Ariz. (EMUEagles.com) — One day after history was made, it was repeated again Sunday, Feb. 26, as Eastern Michigan University senior Kyle Rodes (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) posted seven birdies and an eagle on the par-5 fifth hole on the way to a career-low 64 during the second round of the Loyola Intercollegiate on the par 72, 7,015 yard Palm Valley Golf Club course.
The Plymouth, Mich. product was brilliant on his second day to move up six spots into sole possession of first place with a 36-hole total of 133 (69-64). He posted a three-under 33 on the front nine and added five more birdies on the back nine. The 64 is tied for the lowest score in the history of the EMU Golf program and was the lowest mark since yesterday when teammate Nic Ross (Dundas, Ontario, Canada-Highland Secondary) fired the same total. Rodes becomes just the fourth different Eagle to card the historic mark joining Ross, Cam Burke and Korey Mahoney.
The two-day 133 is one stroke better than EMU's all-time 36-hole mark previously held by Mahoney at the Big Red Classic, March 8, 2003, with a 134 (64-70). Rodes also moved within striking distance of the best 54-hole mark in EMU history. The senior would need to card a 72-or-better to surpass Mahoney's program-low 206 (71-65-70) that was accomplished at the Marshall Invitational, April 8, 2005.
After two rounds of play, the Eagles lead the event by eight shots at 552 (275-277). As a team, the Eagles finished day one with an 11-under par, 277, to increase their advantage in the tournament by three. The next closest squad is Connecticut, who has a tally of 560 (282-278). EMU's 277 is the fourth-best 18 hole mark in program history. The Green and White are also on pace to break the team's three round mark of 850 (209-213-214) set back in the fall at the EKU Intercollegiate, Sept. 17-18.
Ross is in second place at the tournament, as he posted a 72 after his sizzling 64 for a two-day score of 136. Just five strokes behind Rodes is sophomore Beau Breault (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) with a 141 (71-70) in a tie for 16th. Senior Jared Multer (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview-Grand Rapids C.C.) and Joey Kremer (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Senator O'Connor) rounded out the lineup with a 142 (71-71) and a 150 (78-72), respectively.
The three-day tournament wraps up Monday, Feb. 27, with tee times beginning at 7:45 a.m. MT (9:45 a.m. ET). Fans can follow along with live scoring on Golfstat.com.
