FULL RESULTS
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University rowing team began the spring portion of the 2016-17 season when it traveled down to Tuscaloosa, Ala. for a week-long spring break trip culminating in a day of racing against the University of Alabama today, Feb. 25.
The Eagles participated in 16 1,000 meter pieces with the Crimson Tide, putting four separate boats on the water. This included three Varsity 8 boats, as well as one Varsity 4.
"It was great to get down to Alabama and get a lot of water time this week," Head Coach Kemp Savage said. "The team put in 150 miles of training and made some great improvements. Then, being able to race a Power Five team at the end of the week and see our results improve from last year shows some good speed we hope to carry into our spring racing."
While EMU was unable to claim victory in any of the 16 races, the Eagles were able to gain valuable experience training in the warmer southern climate, as well as racing boats from another school for the first time this spring.
Each boat for EMU participated in four races each, while Alabama had 'A' and 'B' boats in two races, as well as a 'C' boat in the Varsity 4 event. It was in the Varsity 4 race that the Eagles were able to claim third place over the 'C' boat of UA in three of the four races, with a day-best time of 4:08.0, which was 16 seconds better than the 'C' boat in that heat.
The Eagles will return to competitive action in April when they travel over to Grand Valley State University to participate in the Lubber's Cup. Action from Spring Lake will run Saturday-Sunday, April 8-9.
