RIO VERDE, Ariz. (EMUEagles.com) -- After the first day of action at the 2017 Rio Verde Invitational, the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team is tied for second-place in the 19-team field. The Eagles shot a first round 300 on the par 72, 6,215-yard White Wing Golf Course. The round of 300 marks the fourth-straight time that the Eagles have tallied that number at the tournament dating back to last year, when EMU did so on three consecutive days.
Sophomore Penelope Guilleux (Saint Maur Des Fosse, France-Arsonval) sits in a tie for fourth after an opening round score of 72. After a birdie to begin the round on the fourth hole, Guilleux struggled with three holes over par on the front nine before closing her day with two birdies in her final six frames. For the Saint Maur Des Fosse, France native, it marked the second time this year she had carded a round at par-or-better.
Behind Guilleux, freshman Maria Connelly (Waterville, Ohio-Anthony Wayne) fired a 75 to sit in a tie for 17th place. Junior Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne) rounded out the Eagles in the tournament's top 25 with a round of 76 to tie for 23rd place. Senior Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) and sophomore Kritsuda Apiwatthanadol (Bangkok, Thailand-Somtawin Witead Suska Huaymongkhon School) completed the EMU lineup with a 77 and an 85, respectively.
The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) leads the field at seven-over 295, five strokes ahead of EMU and NIU at 12-over. The Roos' Chandler Gallagher a shot a first round 69 for a stroke advantage on the rest of the field.
Saturday's second round is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. MT with a shotgun start.
