Eagles Sit in Second After Two Days at Rio Verde Invite

RIO VERDE, Ariz. (EMUEagles.com) -- With two days of play at the 2017 Rio Verde Invitational in the books, the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team holds second-place in the 19-team field. The Eagles improved three shots on their opening round to shoot a second round 297 at White Wing Golf Course, Feb. 25. The round of 297, coupled with the Green and White's first round 300, gives EMU a team score of 597, just six strokes behind the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) for first place.
Freshman Maria Connelly (Waterville, Ohio-Anthony Wayne) shot a sound round 73 to give her an overall score of 148, good for a 10th place tie, while junior Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne) recorded a 75 to her previous total, earning her a tie for 23rd with an overall tally of 151. Senior Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) is just one shot back of Beck after two rounds with a 152.
Sophomore Penelope Guilleux (Saint Maur Des Fosse, France-Arsonval) shot an 81 in round two, dropping her out of the top-10 after a first round score of 72. Her overall score of 153 puts her in a tie for 33rd. Rounding out the field for EMU is sophomore Kritsuda Apiwatthanadol (Bangkok, Thailand-Somtawin Witead Suska Huaymongkhon School) who notched a second round 74 and sits tied for 72nd with a tournament score of 159.
UMKC leads the field at 15-over, 591, six strokes ahead of EMU at 21-over. The Roos' Chandler Gallagher a shot a first round 69 and a second round 72 and holds a two stroke advantage on the rest of the field.
Sunday's third round is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. MT with a shotgun start.
