OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Senior Sierra Wagner's (Huntsville, Texas-Huntsville) record-breaking performance highlighted the Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team's second day of competition at the Mid-American Conference Championships Thursday night, Feb. 23, in Oxford, Ohio.
As a team, the Eagles stand in third, trailing Akron and Buffalo. The Green and White hold a one-point edge over Miami, and have accumulated a total of 206 points.
Sophomore Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville) was EMU's top finisher in the 500 Freestyle, clocking in with a career-best time of 4:49.99, which also ranks as the fourth-fastest in program history. Junior Sarah Dombkowski (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth) and senior Carly Jackson (La Porte, Ind.- La Porte) also scored points for the Eagles in the event. Dombkowski secured an eighth-place finish, touching in with a season-best time of 4:53.61, while Jackson added a 13th-place finish.
A season-best time of 2:01.52 fueled senior Mary Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central) to a fifth-place finish in the 200 Individual Medley. Freshman Claire Young (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.-Grosse Pointe South) also nabbed points, notching a 14th-place finish.
Records fell in the 50 free, where Wagner broke Mary Kate MacLean's program standard that was set at last season's MAC Championships. Wagner posted a time of 22.72, becoming the EMU record holder in the event, en route to a third-place finish. Fellow senior Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area) touched in with an 11th-place finish and junior Chase Walker (Virginia Beach, Va.-Landstown) added a 16th-place mark.
On the 1-meter, the Eagles had more divers competing in the session than any other school. Youth led the way in the championship heat, as freshman Brielle Johnston (Ottawa, Ontario-Catholique Franco-Quest) and sophomore Gabrielle Mace posted fifth and sixth-place finishes, respectively. In the 'B' final, juniors Molly Miller (Farmington Hills, Mich.-Harrison) and Alli Shereda (Fraser, Mich.-Fraser) grabbed points for the Eagles. Miller claimed 10th, while Shereda wrapped up a 12th-place finish.
Eastern closed out the session with a fourth-place finish in the 200 Free Relay, as EMU clocked in with a time 1:32.67.
