YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University's men's basketball team saw itself lose its fourth straight game Friday, Feb. 10, when the University of Akron put on a lights-out three-point shooting display at the Convocation Center, connecting on 18 triples. The Eagles (13-12, 5-7 MAC) ended up on the wrong end of an 87-76 decision as the Zips (21-4, 11-1) picked up their league-leading 11th Mid-American Conference victory of the season.
Sophomore James Thompson IV (Baton Rouge, La.-Parkview Baptist) continued his exceptional season donning the Green and White, putting up 19 points and grabbing 14 rebounds on his way to his 14th double-double of the 2016-17 campaign. Senior guard Willie Mangum IV (Richmond, Va.-Marshall (San Jacinto College)) was the Eagles' leading scorer, posting 22 points, while fellow backcourt mate and senior Ty Toney (Atlanta, Ga.-Alpharetta (Georgia Highlands)) added 17 points and five assists of his own.
As a team, Eastern Michigan had an impressive offensive performance shooting 29-of-64 (45.3 percent) from the floor, while hitting 41.7 percent of its three-point shots. However, the Zips connected on an astounding 18 triple tries in 34 attempts, while shooting 52.9 percent from both the floor and the long line. Despite out-rebounding Akron, 39-26, UA's offensive output was too much for the Eagles.
The scoring started when Akron's Antino Jackson connected on a dead spot triple in the Zips' first possession, giving UA a quick 3-0 lead, but the Green and White came back with a 7-0 run to take their largest lead of the game, 7-3. Akron responded with a quick four points, before the two squads traded buckets back and forth.
Looking at an 11-9 lead with 14:27 to go in the first half, Eastern Michigan saw the Zips go on a 9-0 run on the back of three straight three balls and fell behind 18-11. The offenses traded blows until Akron gained its largest lead of the first half, 27-17, after Daniel Utomi knocked down his second three pointer of the game at the 8:08 mark. The Green and White fought back to within five, 33-28, with 2:20 to go before scoring six in a row and taking their last lead of the game, 34-33, with 34 seconds on the clock. On the final possession of the quarter, Akron's Isaiah Johnson converted a layup with just three seconds to go, giving the Zips the one-point, 35-34, lead at the half.
Akron opened up the second half on a 27-14 run, going 9-of-14 from the floor and 7-of-10 from beyond the arc, stretching out its lead to 14, 62-48, over the first 10-plus minutes of the first half. The zips remained on top by double digits for the next few minutes before Mangum went on a 7-0 run of his own to bring in to within nine, 70-61, with 5:16 to go.
Akron's three point barrage continued hitting another pair of triples to regain the double-digit lead and the Zips cruised to an 11-point, 87-76, win through the final five minutes of game action.
Eastern remains at home Tuesday, Feb. 14, when the Eagles welcome Ohio University to the Convocation Center. EMU is looking to sweep the Bobcats after defeating OU in Athens, Ohio, 53-49, earlier this season.
