HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team concluded action at the 55th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships this evening, Dec. 30, at Sears Centre Arena. Redshirt junior Kayne MacCallum (Green Oaks, Ill.-Libertyville) was the lone Eagle to place in his respective weight class, taking eighth-place at 184 lbs.

MacCallum, who took eighth among 30 of the top competitors at that weight class in the country, was EMU's third straight placer at The Midlands in the last three years of competition. It was the first time the Eagles have placed a wrestler in the top-eight at three straight Midlands in program history. As a team, EMU finished tied for 21st out of 38 teams with 21.5 team points.

The Illinois native began his day in the consolation rounds, needing just one win to guarantee his spot in the top eight. In this consolation bout, MacCallum found himself in a dogfight, as the only points in regulation came on a pair of escapes. Tied 1-1 in OT, sudden victory did not yield any points, leading to the tiebreaker. MacCallum got his escape, and then rode out the second tiebreaker period to secure the 2-1 win, and clinch his spot in the top eight.

In the consolation quarterfinals, he met No. 17 nationally ranked Joe Heyob of Penn. MacCallum battled, but fell short, 5-1, placing him in the seventh place match. There, he ran out of gas, and was defeated, 10-4, to take eighth place at 184 lbs.

The other two Eagles to compete on the day, redshirt senior Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption (Indiana)) and redshirt sophomore Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio-Lake), were both eliminated in their first consolation matches of the day, leaving them one win short of the podium.

The Eagles will return to the mats in 2018 when they open Mid-American Conference dual action on the road against Ohio University Friday, Jan. 5. First whistle from Athens is set for 7 p.m.
