It was EMU's first sweep of WMU since 2005
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team defeated Western Michigan University in straight sets (25-18, 25-23, 25-14) Friday, Nov. 3, inside the Convocation Center. The Eagles (12-17, 4-9 MAC) kept their Mid-American ConferenceTournament hopes alive by sweeping the Broncos (14-10, 7-6 MAC) for the first time since Sept. 24, 2005.
The Eagles were the superior team offensively, attacking at a .259 percentage compared to the Broncos' .091 clip. EMU out-killed Western Michigan, 41-37 and overmatched the Broncos in assists, 40-34. On the defensive end, the Eagles produced nine blocks and out-dug WMU by a 61-58 count.
Redshirt junior Mallory Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland) registered her 15th double-double of the season, contributing a team-high 30 assists, while adding 10 digs. Rajewski led the Green and White with a .462 attacking percentage, and was one of four Eagles with at least seven kills. Junior Jordan Smith (Solon, Iowa-Solon) paced EMU with 13 kills to surpass the 300-kill mark this season, and was one of five to produce at least nine digs. Junior Alyssa LaFace (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) and redshirt sophomore Cassie Haut (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary Catholic Central) stood tall on defense with 17 and 13 digs, respectively.
Despite trailing by as many as four in the early stages, EMU kept the set close and was able to chip away at the deficit. After head coach Kimi Olson called timeout, the Eagles won nine consecutive points to take a 21-15 lead during a rally in which the Broncos burned both of their timeouts. In total, EMU scored 13 of the final 16 points to capture the opening set, 25-18.
The Eagles picked up where they left off to begin the second frame, tallying six of the first nine points. However, WMU would not go away quietly and grabbed seven of the following nine points to grab a 10-8 lead. EMU responded with a rally of its own, winning four of five points to re-take the lead, 14-13. Both teams then matched each other nearly point-for-point in a set containing 14 ties and six lead changes. Tied 22-22, the Eagles snatched three of the final four points for a 25-23 victory and a two-set cushion. EMU is a perfect 7-0 this season when winning the first two sets and 20-0 under Olson.
EMU fired on all cylinders in what proved to be the final set, registering a .414 attacking percentage while WMU hit at a .024 rating. The Green and White jumped out to a 6-1 lead, prompting the Broncos to use a timeout. This time, WMU had no answer for the EMU's impressive offense as the Eagles jumped out to a commanding 21-12 lead. The Green and White slammed the door on the Broncos, completing the sweep with a convincing 25-14 win. The result extends the Broncos' losing streak to three consecutive matches and gives Ball State sole possession of first place atop the MAC West standings.
