YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team hosted the annual EMU Open Saturday, Nov. 11, inside the Convocation Center. The Eagles hosted a number of top competitors, and sent 12 of their own onto the mats, five in the open division, and seven unattached. Of the 12, four placed in their respective weight class, including unattached freshman Tanner Smith (New Carlisle, Ohio-Mechanicsburg) who won the freshman/sophomore 149 lbs. division.
It was the second straight tournament win for Smith to start his career, after taking the freshman/sophomore 149 lbs. crown at the Michigan State Open. He is now 8-0 to begin his time as an Eagle. Also placing in the EMU Open were unattached freshmen Mason Kauffman (Stratford, Wis.-Stratford) and Brandon Moen (Owatonna, Minn.-Owatonna), who took second and third at freshman/sophomore 157 and 184 lbs. brackets, respectively. Redshirt freshman Wyatt Harden (Hadley, Mich.-Oxford) was the final placer, taking fourth at the freshman/sophomore heavyweight division.
EMU returns to tournament action this weekend, Sunday, Nov. 19, for the Keystone Classic in Philadelphia. Action from the campus of the University of Pennsylvania will run throughout the day.
